Im looking at getting a new rifle in .308. Looking at some tactikool rifles such as the rem 700 sps tactical or the 700 ltr, savage 10fp or like a wetherby but i forgot model number, or any other tactikool rifle for 1k or less not inlcuding scope. How much difference in accuracy does it make from a 20" barrel to a 26" barrel out to say 500 yrds.

Im guessing most i would usually shoot would only be a few hundred yards (200-300) but i would like to know if i should expect like a few inch difference out much farther.

Some say the 20" barrel are little more accurate because the shorter barrel is more rigid than a longer barrel. The quality of the barrel is what makes the most difference in accuracy. What you will loose with a shorter barrel is some velocity but not that much.

My suggestion is go with a 24" heavy barrel Savage 10 they have the acute triggers that very good. A good trigger is a must for a accurate rifle.

I know some will say get a Remington 700. You can't go wrong with either but the Rem triggers are not very good.

Good set up suggestion that will keep you around $1000

Savage 10 FR Basic rifle with acute trigger
Change stock Bell & Carlson Vertical Grip Tactical Medalist Series with full length bedding block
Millett TRS-1 Tactical scope 4x16x50 illuminated mildot with 100moa total vertical adj
Burris XTR Rings
TPS 20 moa scope base you don't need a 20 moa base with a 100moa scope but why not go for it.

This is not the best set up that money can buy but it is a very good set up for the money and it will look cool. The Millett TRS scope is a very good scope for the money and they have a lifetime replacement Guarantee. They are a whole lot of scope for around $300.

I know some are going to say get a Super Sniper scope but they are a fixed power scope and the glass on them is no better than the glass on the Millett TRS. I have looked through both side by side and they are about the same clarity. The TRS I think is a little clearer.

I don't won't to make this a debate on scopes so if you like a fixed power scope you can't go wrong with the Super Sniper.
