Barrel pitting?

I'm not sure where you are located in Florida, but it might be less cost and easier to drive to a factory authorized service center and drop off your rifle in person. That way you can speak with someone when dropping it off and maybe get them to take a gander at what you are seeing while you are there (take your bore scope along). If they cannot do the repair or claim it's not covered at least you aren't out more money and time.

The people at those places are simply worker bees. They aren’t necessarily or usually even “Gun People”. And they certainly aren’t Winchester people. They are just drop off centers. But I would be very, very careful. Half the time, no one knows what’s going on if you go and it’s an 18yo behind the desk, don’t even bother. No… I would just send it myself. Deal directly with Winchester! Don’t use a “middle man”.

Here is an update. As of Labor Day, Winchester Service will not send prepaid mailers for firearms that need service that are within a year of purchase directly to the owner so they can send it via USPS. They will send prepaid mailers to your FFL only. I'll be sending mine via USPS with a cardboard sleeve over the original box my firearm came in with my additional reinforced ends. So a sleeve made for the dimensions of an original Winchester box, you can expect about $45.00 and shipping via USPS with insurance, Priority Mail, is about $72.00 from Central Florida to Arnold , Missouri. Just a heads up. Other Manufacturers may follow suit.

The gun goes back after today's range work at 100 yards. Winchester would like a look at it as they got back to me this morning. Today's group was 6 inches by 14.5 inches at 100.

Pitted area

Throat area. I'll link the video from youtube in a bit.
Are you certain that those spots are pits instead of deposits? (If you're not certain, you might remove the mirror from the end of the Teslong probe and look at the bore to better allow you to see the surface topography.) Some of the spots look like deposits to me, but some do look more like pits. A lot of them look very much like some Teslong shots that I have from my CZ 527 Varmint barrel after shooting a relative few rounds through it over a 3 year period, but not really cleaning it. The stuff in my barrel was resistant to removal by brushing and patches using nitro solvent, and I was convinced (and sick about it) for a couple of days that the barrel was pitted. Then I allowed some 40X Bore Cleaner to soak the bore for about 24 hours and I was able to scrub it all away to a pristine bore.

As I said, those spots in your bore may in fact be mostly pits (I'm pretty sure I see some spots that are deposits), but the bore scope can make pits and deposits look a lot alike when viewed from above.

The areas in question are not deposits. I've checked the bore as you have stated. The areas are not three dimensional and proud but rather recessed and appears that imbedded carbon accounts for the black color. These are my observations, but actual cause is eluding me. All my guns are cleaned meticulously after a range session and oiled for protection. I use Patch-out with Accelerator and JB Borepaste, Boreshine and Kroil on this rifle. I have used Barnes CR-10 and Wilson Combat bore cleaner. Have used bronze brushes sparingly and use Nylon brushes for basic cleaning. I will tell you that the steel they use is very hard. At any rate it ships today. Glad to be done with it on my end, rather concentrate on shooting.

Well, another left turn. I was turned away by the USPS in Ormond Beach. They wanted see my papers. Any documents were in the package and I offered to open the package and they refused. They claimed that the rifle had to be dismantled, then they claimed the firing pin had to be removed to make the mail safe. All falsehoods. I called them out at every turn. Then the supervisor took my name to call me later, which happened about 20 minutes later telling me it had to be registered mail and only from an FFL. All false info. So I went beach-side about 6 miles away and the clerk was afraid of my query regarding mailing and immediately rang a Supervisor and he told me, no problem to mail but wanted see the letter from Winchester. I said no problem and I would return with it Monday as I had enough of this at this point and went to the beach. I also told him I didn't trust that the gun wouldn't be damaged by someone who held a bias against guns. I think I might see what Winchester will do for me as far as selling me new barrel and I'll have it installed and headspaced. I hope everyone has a better experience than I have had. Monday is a new day, time will tell.

I have sent a few lever actions through USPS. I always ship with the buttstock removed and in the same package. There are just too many goons and that long a package can easily get hurt. Never had to remove firing pins or any of that nonsense. I was asked (didn't have to show anything) if it was going to an FFL holder, I replied yes. No problem, pay here.... I always ship priority, it costs more but I believe fewer goons handle the package... Make sure to insure and anything insured over $500 is automatic signature required.

Continue to march...

Here is an update. We survived the hurricane. Huge tree damage but house and vehicles are fine. No power etc. My gun finally did make it to Winchester with no tracking notices so that was weird. The three culprits at the previous PO are being regrooved and retrained. PostMaster was livid. More to follow.

Glad you made it out of the natural disaster relatively unscathed. Hoping the Winchester disaster has a similar outcome.

FWIW, I just left my local, one person P.O. after having to get a postal m.o. and mailing it. Dude was asleep when I got there, then had to call another office to get instructions on selling a money order.

No, the rifle simply hasn't been accurate enough. I never thought the barrel would be in question. The bore was brilliant with a bore light, flawless appearing. The borescope on the other hand gives more data. The borescope is just another tool. After talking with Winchester today I'm going to hold on to it for another month to see if I can dial it in. If I find the magic formula it stays home. If I can't it goes in for a look by Winchester. Thankyou everyone for the input. The rifle is below. The peeps helped with sight picture.

What's with the rear sight? Do I see a rubber band? A rifle like that deserves a good receiver (peep) sight. It would improve accuracy and the screw-in aperture can be removed for hunting or shooting in poor light.

The sight is a Skinner peep sight in Brass. No rubber bands were used in its installation. lol. I use an adjustable aperture from Merrit but in the picture it has the stock aperture that comes with the sights. from Skinner. A little update re: the rifle. It has had the attention of a gunsmith at Browning/Winchester. I believe the work is done and is going to be final inspected on Monday. Don't have anymore details than that.

Here is a link to a video I shot of my Winchester Miroku Model 94 Sporter. About halfway down the bore pitting seems to be present. My buddies with vastly more experience than I have determined its caused by careless factory work. The gun shoots ok and I'm still looking for a good load that shoots 3-4 inches at 100 yrds. Its had 200 rounds approx. through the bore and I keep it as clean as I can. Is this what we can expect these days from the manufacturers?

Your buddies don't have much more experience than you do. That is definitely pitting. That barrel is buttened and broached looking at the video. Hammer forging is smoother. You're not giving us all the information. How long have you had it? Did you buy it used? I've worked for several gun manufacturers and have looked at thousands of handgun/rifle barrels. If that came from the factory like that, they shipped it dry.

More information. I purchased it new in November of 2021. Barrel is button rifled as per Winchesters product page. I also believe its pitting but keeping an open mind. It's interesting to hear the different opinions.

I've seen that in several barrels.I almost sent one back to Shilen when I saw the exact thing in it.That barrel is one of their Select Match in 280AI.The best group out of it so far is a .194 for 5 shots at 100 yards.Shoot one round through it and those pits are gone.I only clean it with patches because It gets basically no copper in it.I bet that barrel will shoot just fine.Bore scopes can let us see things we ordinarily wouldn't worry about.I don't have one,nor do I use chamber gauges. They cause more worry than they fix.The target tells me what I need to know about a barrel.

If a bore has pits, shooting may not get rid of them, but they might fill with lead and crud, so the bore looks smooth. Actually, the pits may become filled with fouling and if not cleaned-out with a wire brush and solvent, the pits may be enlarged/deepened. An expandible shotgun bore hone, using cutting fluid, can be used to minimize pitting, especially if caught early. Rifle bore pitting is a bigger problem and best handled by a barrel manufacturer. If deep, a new barrel is usually recommended.

Latest update. This has taken an unexpected turn. The rifle failed the accuracy test after some tweaking the gunsmith tried. There are no barrels or replacement Model 94 Sporters in 32 Win Spl. and Winchester said they are not going to make any in the foreseeable future. Winchester offered me a brand-new Model 94 Sporter in 30-30. I agreed only if they would swap the stocks on my Model 94 onto the new Model 94. They agreed. New rifles from Miroku will be shipped at the end of October. I have a bunch of 32 Win Spl. reloading tools and supplies that I am holding onto because I will find another Sporter in 32 Win Spl at some point in time. This has been a strange trip.

WinM94S3030.jpg Yesterday, much to my surprise the rifle shows up at my door. Had no idea it was shipped. Glad I was home. It's of course perfect and the bore had very little pitting so it's off to the range after I install the Skinner sights. The service center failed to install my original stocks as per their work order. They apologized and said if I sent it back they would do what they promised in the first place all at my transfer costs of $150.00 and they would provide a shipping label to my local FFL who won't touch the gun because I didn't buy it there. So, I declined their offer and will counter it with them mailing my original stocks to me and I will mail back the stocks that came on my rifle. That should be interesting but I'm not holding my breath. So, its bittersweet but then look at the world we are living in. I'm done with this nonsense and going to the range. I'm out.

I would call Winchester and talk to them. They should pay shipping both ways and replace your barrel.

I won't be dealing with "Winchester" per your dealings with them. Let us know how it shoots.

I hope a final update. Winchester has very graciously decided to send me the original, awesome stocks that were on the original Model 94. I am truly humbled and grateful as they make the gun an heirloom for future generations of my family members to enjoy. Thankyou Winchester for being the company I was raised on in my journey through my firearm and competition life. I got the call just as business was opening. Again, very grateful.

What a mess! Hopefully things all worked out.

When my Wrangler went wonky, Ruger sent a label for Fed Ex. Went to the office store and shipped it lickety split.

Got an e mail today that it was shipped to a local hub so I can pick it up on Monday.

Stay safe.

1st2030-30.jpg Here are the 1st 20 shots out of the M94 30-30. I am using 33.7 grains of W748 under a 150 Sierra Pro Hunter. The first few shots were the outliers and then on shot 6 to 20, they just dropped right in. All my levers shoot like this. I am now going to fine tune this load and work up another. At this point this load doesn't need much work and I am happy with the results. 1st2030-30.jpg
