barrel question

My freind is wanting to buy a lar 8. The gun shop said it needs to be futed in order for it to cool faster. The rifle comes with the barrel already cryo treated. Is it worth having this done , due to a cryo treated barrel is not supposed to care about heat.
 
Fluting is generally done to heavier barrels to make them ligher weight. A LAR-8 already has a light-profile barrel, so I don't know how much material you could really remove without compromising its structural integrity.

No barrel "needs" to be fluted, anyway. I would not recommend it on this one.
 
Unless it is a bull barrel, don't worry about it. Even then, a bull barrel will heat slower anyway. It won't make much difference either way. A fluted barrel will cool faster, but is bigger to begin with.
 
In my limited experience an unfluted barrel will outperfrom a fluted one for a given barrel diameter. This is just based on my limited unscientifc experience.
 
Any time you machine steel you induce stress into the metal. Cryo is supposed to relieve that stress. If it needs to be fluted it should of been done before it was cryo treated. Anyways thats what my metal working friends tell me.
 
Good barrels are already stress relieved, so I don't know why the cryo treatment would be necessary. Still, I wouldn't have the barrel fluted at this point. The barrel is a finished piece of work. Although the benefits of fluting are debatable, the chance that the barrel won't shoot right after fluting is very real. I'd leave it alone.
