We took the boys out this morning for a bit of fresh air and bird scent.
Beans the Britnany with Buckets the Jagdterrier

Ralphie the Spinone with Buckets

Ralphie pointed the first 4 roosters, Beans went out next and pointed one rooster and one hen. Buckets was there for moral support and sniffing.

This was a scratch hunt at a bird club.

Lately Ralphie the Spinone has been out producing Beans on points. He’s a very meticulous hunter. Beans is more high speed but they are both good bird dogs. They just hunt differently.

Ralphie does not have the stamina that Beans the Brittany does.

I suspect that being a "continental" versatile breed, Ralphie does more ground scenting that air scenting, making them slower in the field. This is the "tracker" in them. Britnanys are more air scenters and thus makes them faster...and a tad less thorough. Hunt clubs/game farms tend to have a lot of bird scent around, due to all the birds released daily. Combine this with heavy cover and scent(depending on the time of day and conditions) tends to hang low and "Cold" scent and "Hot" scent can be harder for some dogs to differentiate. Add to this dogs that are used to being hunted fast or used to "runners" and those birds that hang tight are passed by the first time. My GWP is a slow worker too and finding those "scratch" birds that others halve missed is her forte. It also is advantageous when hunting alone.

Sounds like you have a good one.

We almost bought a jagdterrier several years ago. Bought a airedale instead.
It's about time to buy another dog.

Jagds are nuts. Puppies are cute as can be, but they grow up and fight and or kill everything they can...
Or something like that..

They are definitely high drive dogs, I’ve got some fighters but not all of them are dog aggressive. They do like to crunch fuzzies, but mine live in the house with cats without any issues.

They are terriers, out little Yorkie terrier would catch & kill rats, moles and squirrels.
Best mole dog ever. We haven't had a mole in our yard more then a couple of hours when we had him.

Yeah, I was being a bit overly dramatic. And you are absolutely correct, other than the one time, all of your dogs have been very civil and well behaved towards me.

I have failed in my training then. They are supposed to throat and groin latch any expatriate Texans that step foot on the property.
