Got off of work Friday at 4:30 and took off down the road. The guy I was supposed to meet at the boat luanch wasn't there and I couldn't reach him on his cell. So I waited for an hour for him to arrive. As I was waiting another friend of mine shows up and suggests that I ride with them, so of course I did...

We go up river about 10 miles and tye up, I jump out with my binocs and start glassin'. Bryan is fooling around in his boat and Robert is just being Robert, when about 5 minutes into glassing I say "who wants this bear?" They start jumpin around lookin for their spotting scopes, while I discribe where it is...

This was a very large black bear in the 6 1/2 foot range about 2/3 of the way up the mountain. We jump back in the boat and get a little closer to the mountain. We find a spot next to the mountain about a mile from the bear. It took us about 1 hour to reach a spot really close to the bear but we couldn't see it due to the thick alder's. Bryan goes a little higher to see if he can locate the bear for a shot, but had no luck! He comes back to me to see what to do next, as he's never been bear hunting. I pull out my varmint calls and give 3 long blasts, on the third blast the alders come alive about 30 yards from us moving down mountain...

There was a small outcrop with a large pine tree on it about 20 yards from us and that's where the bear was heading. So I grab the .300 Wby and get ready. All of a sudden, we see 2 very small cubs take off up the tree, while momma guards the base of the tree and begins watching us. We watch her for about 20 minutes as she paces back and forth. This is the first time I've been that close to a momma bear and her cubs without being chased... It was an awesome experience, and we made it out of there without being mauled which is always an added plus.

It took an hour of hard walking to get within' range of the bear but it only took 18 minutes to get back to the boat. That is how steep it was, we were literally crawling on hands and knee's going up the mountain... :D

Bears & Stew-

Howdo, Hans got a nice blackie last week with his custom 3" .500 Smith!
One broadside shot with a 440gn@1200fps just behind the shoulder angling through the vitals and the spine.
BTW we has bear stew for breakfast and halibut for lunch at Rabbit Creek Sunday! Yummmm

Mmmmm... I'm still tryin' to get everybody else a bear... I got a 7 foot blackie last year, skull measured 19 15/16", as soon as everybody I know gets one then it will be my turn, I almost dropped the hammer on a big boar two weeks ago, the shooter chickened out... LOL :D
