Is there any trick to removing the sight blade on the adjustable rear sight on a S&W revolver?

I want to replace the original with a white outline blade.

I have not been able to find the prescribed procedure for this and I don't want to strip some threads or something worse.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

The nut is riveted on the end of the windage screw and the usual procedure is to use the proper spanner screwdriver blade and break it off. Replace screw, nut, and blade as a set, then rivet the hollow end of the screw out into the nut. Takes a few tools for the job. Maybe somebody will come along with a method to recycle the pieces.

Step One: remove entire rear sight assembly.

Step Two: replace with Millet rear sight of appropriate height and desired design.

Mr. Watsons idea is the best approach.
FWIW, we replace the assembly in most cases, and the replacement parts are available cheaply from S&W. In older cases, where originality is concerned (the older windage screws had flat heads as opposed to the domed/rounded style currently offered), it's sometimes possible to use a stainless pick and work the staked material back in towards the center of the screw. *IF* you're lucky enough to get under the edges of the stake, that is. You could also take a drill bit the same diameter as the OD of the threads on the screw and drill just past the staked material. In either case, the re-staking won't look as good as a replacement assembly.

I had to break mine.
