So I've done a lot of homework and I've narrowed the huge list down to beltman.

Help me spend some money.

I'm trying to decide between the bullhide and horsehide.

Now, I like a stiff belt as my normal rig is a Wilderness 1.5" 5-stitch belt. (The desire for a good leather belt arises from a desire to look less "tactical"). I carry a 4.25" 1911 both IWB and OWB, FWIW.

Anyway, can anyone compare the bullhide with the internal stiffener to the horsehide (I guess both with and without the stiffener in a perfect world)? My wallet would prefer the bullhide with the stiffener. But I can't help but wonder about the horsehide (or even adding the stiffener to it). Is the horsehide "worth" the extra $$? I realize the premium leathers above the horse (shark, elephant, spotted owl...) have appearance qualities as well as abrasion advantages. What about cow vs horse?

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I prefer the look of the bullhide, the horsehide is more dense and does not seem to take dye as well, and as such doesn't seem to have as consistent of a finish. I have both, and I would say they perform equally well, but I think the bullhide looks better.

As far as the stiffener, unless you are going with a 1.25" belt, I would consider it unnecessary. The 1.5" bullhide is plenty stiff on it's own.

The 1.25" belt is stiff as heck in horse. When it came time for me to choose I drove over to his shop and looked at both and liked the horse a little better, but they don't look much different and they are both very stiff.

I just purchased a black on black 1.5" in horsehide. It's a great belt! I figured the extra cash was worth it in the long run.

I love having 7 holes instead of 5; it works really well with my Galco Royal Guard IWB. It carries a 5" steel 1911 like its not even there.

My next belt will have the tapered front. It will likely agree more with my gut.

After talking to Jim, I went the same route highorder did, horsehide with 7 holes. He assured me it would be PLENTY stiff.

I love dealing with small companies where the owner answers the phone and is the guy likely making your things.

Two thumbs up for customer service!
