Last year I purchased a ZT 0200 tactical folder it was a great knife but I realized it didn't fit the need. I started looking for a longer, lighter fixed blade and was eventually offered a trade + cash for a Mel Pardue Benchmade 10505 Rant DPT. I was a little iffy at first about doing this trade but the specs of the Rant were what I was looking for, so I made the trade.
Now that I've had it awhile I'm very pleased with this knife. Turns out mine is the 440c steel version. The Rant has awesome balance, it feels really great in hand, solid and comfortable, its Kraton rubber grip just adds to the goodness. The knife's blade is thick and strong, also damn sharp and holding a very good edge. Pretty impressive knife, seems to be worth much more than its cost...

I love my Rants. I have a 440C and a D2. They are the perfect size for EDC. With a kydex sheath the Rant disappears underneath a T-shirt.

What have you used it for and how did it perform?
I tested the requisite paper cutting, which it acts like a razor, just the lightest pressures and it carving beautiful curves. The carving power is great, making spear points from wood/sticks is a breeze. I haven't and don't intend to stab metal but from the penetration I get in wood, I'm sure it would easily pierce a hood or door panel. I doubt the Rant would be much good for any serious chopping or batoning, it weighs in at < 6oz ...anyway, I have a Becker BK-2 Campanion for that business ;)

That wasn't much of a rant.. no cussing, no aspersions to their parents, etc. All in all, a pretty weak rant.

Hehe

The same rant as pictured is my camping knife. It holds an edge very well. I thought about buying one in D2, but never saw the need..well worth the fifty bucks i spent for it new..

My buddy Justin carries a Rant as his main hunting knife, and he has been pretty pleased with it over time. I like it just fine for that purpose, and I happen to think it's kind of a cool knife.

He is actually on his second one as the sheath for the first one was unacceptable and resulted in his knife falling out in the field unbeknownst to him, never to be seen again. As his finances allow, he intends to get a better kydex sheath made for it.

I guess the biggest thing I can say is that he liked the first one well enough to buy a second one!
