Can't change an FS to a G or vice versa, other than buying a new slide.

Can change a 92 to a 96 or vice versa buy swapping slides. Beretta sold a "92FS Combo" a few years ago that shipped with an extra slide. You can even use the same mags, the .40 will just hold less rounds.

Oh wow, I never knew that. Is it possible to get just the slide for an FS96 new, or was that somthing only with the combo kits?

Oh I am not going to buy one any time soon. My wife is already nearing breaking point over my recent purchase of reloading equipment. Maybe some day down the road though. I was just curious if it *could* be found new. I tried google searching too btw, and found one used 96g slide, but nothing new or used in the way of 96FS slides.

correct me if i'm mistaken, but i think the conversion only goes the one way.

the Combo package was a 96 frame combined with a 92 and 96 upper.

the dimensions of the 96 frame are different than the 92. the 96 will feed 9mm round but the .40 rounds won't feed through the 92 frame

it's the same for the mags. a 92 mag holds the .40 rounds too low for the slide to reliably pick up. the 9mm round sit high in the 96 mag, but the slide still clears

Soooo, what is the general consensus about dropping a .357 sig barrel into a Beretta 96?

it's been done...a little hard on the frame/locking block

just change your recoil spring and locking block often

Bummer, I started kinda hoping I would be able to get a 96FS slide and run .40 through my 92FS some day. I guess it makes sense though, that it would work converting down but not up.
