Came across a beretta cheetah in stainless steel at a local gun show, and the caliber designation on the gun was "9mm short", rather than 380. Don't know that much about this particular gun, but would that designation indicate a much older model? He was asking $500. It looked to be in good shape.

The Beretah Cheetah was never made in stainless steel but it did come in a nickel finish. The gun you saw may also have been hard chrome plated, so as to give it the appearance of a stainless steel finish. There have been several different .380 models, like the Model 84, 85, and 86, all of which were named Cheetah. They differ in the number of rounds the mag holds, or by how they operate (the Model 86 has a tip-up barrel for chambering the first round). All of them are well designed guns, and in my experience with them, very accurate and extremely reliable.

The Beretta 84's and 85's are considers by many to be among the best .380 handguns in the world. A new Nickel model 84 retails for $700, so depending upon the condition, $500 might be a good price.
