My wife, a permanent resident alien (a Scotswoman), just got her NH pistol permit (took 8 days). Yesterday she bought a Bersa Thunder 380 (duo-tone) and two 50-round boxes of Winchester 95 gr Silvertips ($23.95 ea). When she got home I showed her how to field strip it and she gave it a good cleaning and lube. She spent about an hour handling the pistol: inserting and dropping the mag, working the safety (drops the hammer) and slide release, and dry firing against an aiming dot I have above my reloading bench. The slide release, mag release, and safety posed no problems.

Then she tested it at the outdoor range. It functioned flawlessly and shot to point of aim. The recoil was not a problem due to the perfect fit in her hand. I had her shoot from between 10 feet and 20 feet. Her groups were about 4 inches and clustered in the center of a full-size FBI target.

To test whether she was flinching I loaded the mag, pretended to chamber a round, and handed her the pistol. When she lined up on the target and pulled the trigger she didn't flinch at all. I could barely tell that she pulled the trigger. I'm very impressed with her shooting and the performance of the weapon.

Her only problem was inserting the cartridges into the mag. They're small and the mag spring is strong. She got a sore thumb. But that happens to everybody.

She had a great time and talked about it all day.

During the shooting session, I only intervened when I saw the supporting hand's thumb wrapped over the strong hand. (She was risking a cut from the slide.) Other than that I kept my mouth shut and stood behind her out of the way.

I shot five rounds from it and liked it. But I'll stick to my 1911A1.

Later in the day I went out to Wal*Mart and bought 500 rounds of 380 ACP Winchester 95 gr FMJ in the 100-round value packs ($19.97 ea).

Now to get her a holster and some extra mags.

Today I ordered 380 ACP reloading dies and bullets from MidwayUSA. (Maybe she'll try reloading too.)

Damn near everyone has good luck with their Bersa. They are well made, and reliable. I don't have one, PPK/S and .380 Guardian that I LOVE, but I would not hesitate to try one. Enjoy.

There is nothing wrong with Bersa in overall quality.
The only complaint I can think of comes in the event you need to repair one.
Putting one back together is even more frustrating than a USP!

I think the bad rep derives from this: the majority of Thunder .380's are accurate, dependable little pistols. A smallish percentage are very unreliable (like mine was). At that point, it seems that they often can't be made to be 100%. If you get a good one- which appears to be likely- you're in hog heaven; if not, you're in pig, um, stuff, and need to replace the gun. My two, or so, cents.

I don't carry my Bersa Thunder .380 any more since I switched to my Glock 36 .45 ACP.

But, the Bersa is a nice, dependable, accurate gun. It's great fun to shoot, and should serve your wife very well.

There is some great info on the Bersa at this site: http://www.geocities.com/bersa_thunder/

Stay safe,
ChickenHawk
