The Dreaded Ducktail is not my favorite to look at but works very well for me.
I seem to have adopted a giant 24 year old who goes about 6'4" with big mitts. Which readily available grip frame and grips do large pawed people prefer? Any SAS type shooters who have a favorite grip for that series of open top frames? Is the 1860 Pietta grip the best? He wants a .36 full sized steel frame to start with. The kid isn't broke or made of money so a reasonable solution is best.

All guesses and replies from experience most welcome.

1860 army pietta grip is perfect for me. I have 2 of them. The Uberti Walker grip is nice and large also.
That's the direction I'm thinking. I might just steer him towards an 1861 Pietta. Not sure if it's the .36 or the 51 look he's sold on. He did understand .36 . Think he saw Mike's video on the 1851 as a first gun. Not a terrible choice imho, love mine.

I've got the same big mitts problem as the young fellow. The Pietta 1860 grips are the most comfortable I've used on a C&B revolver. I don't know if any 36 calibers come with that grip size. Is a 44 caliber out of the question? The cost of the gun and components will be about the same.

I know this isn't what the young man is looking for (Yet), but on the big hands topic, putting a Super Blackhawk grip frame on a Ruger Old Army is a combo plenty of folks like to have.

If he's that big of a man (with hands to match) and a .44 is not out of the question, suggest a Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon.

The Pietta 1860 Army grip assembly will fit the Pietta Navy frame (1851/1861) easily.

Just a size comparison for him:

I'd definitely go .44 by the way. The .36es are fun but they feel like cap guns next to the thump of the .44s. Big hands, big grips, big balls, big booms.

the 1861 has the smaller "navy" grip FYI.

IF he likes the look of the 1851 but wants a large grip, I believe you can put an Army grip on a pietta navy frame, but don't quote me on that. And in that case you can also go ".44 navy" and get the octagonal barrel but in a non-historically correct .44 caliber.

Some vids FYI

Then that is the solution. He can afford to put than on any .36 Pietta that will take it. I think his big gun is going to be a Walker, it's his surname and he saw Lonesome Dove. He also said he liked my 1860 so maybe a 61, a 60 and a 60 grip frame / grip / assembly. Good time for him to discover yonder mainspring. I'm not sure he has seen the Dragoon but i'm sure he saw "last man standing' with William Sanderson busting a bad guy with one. Uberti prop I believe. Have to send him some videos. #kidstoday

I'm the idiot that wants a brass Sheriff .44 'navy' and a steel 7.5" .44 'navy' as well . I have watched entirely too much television. Good to know on the '61. if he wanted a 'set' he could just order antoher 60 grip assembly.

I didn't even think about the ROA. That's pretty slick. If they only made a RON i 36 'swift'

For your lad wanting to shoot a normal sized pistol, the best choice is the 1860. Here are an 1861 Navy with the Navy sized grip frame, an old 1860 Army, and a full sized 1860. All are Ubertis of varying vintage, but Pietta makes these models currently as well. This grip frame can also be adapted to the SAA and it’s clones.

I would go with a Model 1860 as well. I have smaller size hands and the Model 1860 grip frame allows for plenty of room to get a decent grip on the gun. Currently I have two of them: a Colt Generation 3 and a newer Pietta.

If he really wants a .36 cal (my favorite by far...and with a 140-145 grain flat meplat conical it will give some tremendous power) but wants a larger grip frame he can always put an 1860 army grip grame on it. Pietta brand that is. The current run guns theyre making this year is top notch. I really like the extra attention theyre putting into the old silver models.
