Since I've finished my initial loads of 230 Gr Ball ammo on my new press (havin' a great time by the way), I would like some recommendations on which 200 gr LSWC you experienced 45 shooters prefer and why?

Thanks for you help!

In the past I woud have recommended Penn Bullet, or Russell, a local caster.
Now I am using diamond hard bullets and they are actually a bit softer than either of the above. Penn bullets are brinell 21, and Russell are brinell 18, the diamond hards are like 14, much softer.

I have been using trailboss powder 5.0 grains with a 200 LSWC, I am getting excellent accuracy and no leading.

The thing that I found is that if you are using harder bullets you have to drive them at a higher velocity to avoid leading, Harder bullets may if driven too slowly fail to obdurate or seal to the bore, they then suffer flame cutting which will cause leading. So its imortant to match the Hardness to the velocity. Brinell 14 bullets lead the least at 800-850 fps, I have found this to be true with Unique, Bullseye, Clays, Titegroup, solo 1000 (current favorite of bullseye competitors at my club) and Trailboss powders in .45 acp.

I load and shoot this bullet, 200 lswc by the thousands every year, and trailboss is the best powder bar none, no smoke, no leading, unbelievable accuracy. I have shot the smallest groups with this powder out of my, 1911s, model 625, and model 22 and blackhawk revolvers.

I have also loaded a couple thousand Berrys plated bullets the drawback with them is you have to load them a little longer for 1911s than the Blackhawk likes so I have to keep two seperate batches.

How do you get the wheelbarrel full of Trail Boss in the case?

I have tried TB with plated bullets but not cast yet. I still have some Precision 200 Gr. SWC bullets. What charge of Trail Boss would you recommend with them?

Thanks Masterblaster,

Any recommendations on bullets I can get through mail order?

Redhat,

The short answer is the 200g LSWC that is chambered as the sights come on target.

Seriously, any 200 grainer from a reputable regional or national bullet maker is going to shoot very well with minimal leading (at nominal velocities). Check for consistent sizing from.4518 to .4522, proper lubrication, and reasonable hardness. In general, expect prices to range from $21.00 to $30.00 for a box of 500.

Most cast bullets are very good!

I know Midway sells the Laser Cast @ $30 for 500. Sounds decent to me when that's aonly a few dollards than I paid for my FMJs.

Where do you live?

If you have to mail order them,

Penn bullet, but be prepared to wait a month or so for your order to be filled.

Midway is the most expensive place to bu cast bullets, since you can add another $10 per five hundred, $16 per thousand, shipped.

Where do you live???

Try Powder Valley, or try Graffs, or Wideners, or TNT reloading, all are much cheaper than Midway.

Penn Bullets also makes a Target grade .45 200 swc that is softer than their premium hardcast that I've had excellent results with. www.pennbullets.com Master blaster is right about the wait but worth it.

Which Mastercast? There's two web sites:

Mastercast.com

Mastercast.net

I just got in 2,000 Bear Creek 200 gr LSWC. They are moly coated like Precision bullets. Also got in 2,000 Penn LSWC. That order was every bit of 4 weeks, maybe a bit longer. That is my first batch of Penn. Seemed nice. Shot 200 or so of them today and they made holes where I pointed the gun. I was practicing for speed steel so didn't get much of an idea for accuracy. I'll shoot some bullseye with them next week. The Penn didn't run as rough in the press as the Oregon Laser Cast.

I like the H&G 68 pattern. We sold many many pounds of these under Dry Creek Bullet Works. Give this guy a call. Bullet Doc 540-639-3200. If you get them packed loose in a flat rate box you can ship appox. 2000.

Another source is Wayne Doudna at http://www.customcastbullets.com/ His prices and bullets are good plus he ships flat rate...........Creeker

I use the 200 g. from the bullet works here at home. It is fortunate that I know the owners but the bullets are very accurate and uniform. They make lead bullets in all sizes and calibers. Very friendly and affordable ($50/1000). Their website is www.bulletworks.com
