What is the best powder for a 180gr .30-06 load? I need a load that can take a deer at 300yds. Thanks.

Varget has worked real well for me. I took it out and made sure it was dead on at 150yd today, and it was just as true as the store bought bullets. I shoot it with 150 gr. core lokt, and it does the job. Haven't tried it at 300 yet, but I know the Rem. Core Lokt will do it, so I imagine this stuff will to...

I doubt that there is a "best" powder for .30-06. But, then again. I use H4831SC for bullets 165 grains and heavier...

Awful partial to IMR 4064 for 150's and 165's, H or IMR 4350 for 180's. Have used H414/WW760 for these bullet weights as well, and really like it too. Mag primers are a must with H414/WW760 in my experience for top accuracy.
About any load that will mimic factory spec velocities for 150's (2900), 165's (2800), and 180's (2700) using good bullets is more than capable of flattening any deer @ 300 yards... Your ability to consistently put these bullets into the vitals at this long range is by far the most pressing issue.
Good luck, and get cracking on working up loads to see what you are happy with.

I'm glad to see the what powder threads now & then. I have reloading manuals but having other peoples opinions is good. I have gotten some good advice on what powders to use and it made load development quicker. It also helps when you can't get the powder you want and have to switch.

I like any of the 4350's for 180gr bullets
I like IMR 4895 for 150 and 165/168gr bullets.
For very special hunting applications where I feel I need every last FPS, I like Norma MRP.

IMR 4350 or IMR 3031 both powder will shoot the same groupe in my 30-06
I load on the midrage charge and shoot 20 thou off the lands my COAL run 3.305
Back when the .30-06 was the only cartridge allowed in most high power rifle matches, IMR4064 got the nod for producing best accuracy with bullets 170 to 180 grains. One of the military arsenals (at the insistance of Col Townsend Whelen) years ago tried IMR4064 in their M72 match ammo with 172-gr. bullets and it shot more accurate than IMR4895 that was the standard. But they had to weigh the powder; high speed metering with IMR4895 produced more uniform charge weights and better accuracy.
This powder was used to win virtually all of the matches and set most of the records for ranges up to 600 yards. At 1000 yards, it did just about as well but 200-gr. bullets atop IMR4350 had an edge in the accuracy department.

H4350 under a 165 or heavier slug in my Rem 700 will usually do that. And my particular rifle really loves the Remington core-lockt line of bullets.

As for the poll, none of the above. They're all too fast for the -06. But you'd know that if you ever looked at a loading manual!
Coming here to ask every question you come up against, is one sure way to get confused. Do your own research! That involves picking up a book and reading it!

I'm sure he has manuals, and there is nothing wrong with asking what has worked well for others before laying out money for powder in the current economical climate. That stuff's getting expensive.

I'm not sure if you mean all the powders are too fast for a 180g bullet in 30-06 or they're too fast in general for the '06. If it's the latter, I have to disagree. I've done comparisons between IMR 4350 and Varget in 150 and 165g bullets and in both cases, Varget comes out on top for my gun.
Moreover, my Lyman reloading manual includes 4064 (very close to Varget) for a range of 30-06 bullets.
I'm certainly no expert, I just stuff 'em in and make 'em go BOOM. If I hit what I'm pointing at, WOOHOO! But I'd guess that pretty much ALL of the powders mentioned would take a deer at 300 yards. Unless you're talking about precision shooting at little 12 inch tall paper cutout deer.

I voted for Varget out of the ones listed but I am awful partial to IMR 4064 for 150's and H4350 for heavier bullets
