I recently saw a piston gun in AR, and it was about $1300 MSRP - maybe piston guns will get below $1000 soon?

Besides that, what is good for less than the 1K mark? I would want sights to start off, and rails are decent. Thanks.

If you ask me, pistons in ARs are a novelty, and will probably cause premature wear. Direct impingement pushes the bolt carrier straight back, while a piston will make it tilt, concentrating all the force on the front top and rear bottom (rear bottom?).

That said, CMMG sells what's apparently the only piston gun under $1,000. http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cat=29

What do you need a piston AR-15 for? The real question is: Does the design change enhance anything over time?

Two of my gunsmith friends answer that question with "No!" While I trust their opinion, I do like the idea of a piston AR-15. I am just not certain if anything is gained by the design change. I am also not convinced that they are durable over large round counts. Time will tell as this shakes out.

Check out the CMMG "Bargain Bin". A friend of mine purchased one of these and is very satisfied with it.

you can maybe build a bare-bones milspec AR for that price. Check out bravocompanyUSA.com and look at their uppers and bolts. Slap on some cheap handguards, some kind of rear sight, and build a lower for about $250 out of whatever you can find locally.

Upper = maybe $550 or so with the bolt carrier group
stripped lower = $100-150 depending on which brand (most are all the same and made by CMT, iirc)
a rear carry handle or sight for ~$100
stock and lower parts for another $100-120

put it all together and you have a top-notch AR for under $1000.

I own a piston AR and a DI AR. They are both accurate and in thousands of rounds fired through each rifle I have had no failures of any kind out of either one. That said I believe that of the 2 in an emergency I would grab the DI AR.

I am prejudiced in favor of the DI AR for the following reasons: It has an almost 50 year service history. Everything that can go wrong with an AR is known. the wear patterns, necessary PMCS, component life etc. are all known. Any piston AR is by comparison a recent experiment.

Parts for the DI AR are everywhere, even in a SHTF of TEOTWAWKI proportions you can scavenge parts from many sources. Piston ARs all use proprietary parts that can only be sourced from the manufacturer.

I was trained on the DI AR in basic and over 10 years in National Guard service so I am very comfortable and familiar with field stripping and maintaining a DI AR.

High quality DI ARs are being made by more and more companies every day. I believe that you get more value for your money with an AR than with any other semi auto rifle for sale today.

As to what is good for < $ 1000? The answer is: PLENTY:D

You can put together a top tier DI AR from Bravo Company for around $ 850. or Spikes Tactical for around $ 750. One of slightly lesser pedigree but still a 100% GTG rifle can be had for about $ 615 from DSA and that price includes using A BCM bolt carrier group.

I have the details posted here
