I have been living under a rock the past year and just got off the boats with a pretty good sized chunk of cash and would love to add an ak47 or variant to my collection. I am more utilitarian when looking for rifles and want something that functions flawlessly, is decently accurate, and inexpensive enough that I can actually take it out of the safe and into the boat and not cry if it gets dinged up.

I remember the vz2008s being nifty rifles (i know its not a true ak) and a good deal but it appears as if those dried up.

Is there anything out there currently thats a screaming deal that i should buy? I am currently scouring the web looking for the next best thing, but figured that you guys would have your ear to the ground and would be willing to help a fellow high roader spend some money :D

Kind of depends what you mean by a deal. How much are you wanting to spend?

I always say a good basic Arsenal is a pretty darn good rifle for 1000 dollars.

I agree with C-grunt... An Arsenal is usually a good choice.

But, there are a number of good options right now. Arsenal, WASR, C39 V2, N-PAP, VEPR's... Just depends on features and budget.

Sorry, I forgot to mention budget. I was looking around 600-700 for the rifle itself before changing out any furniture or anything like that.

You can get VEPR's around $750-$800. They're great Russian rifles (should feel at home in Alaska). Century C39 V2's run around $700 as well, while their RAS-47 is about $600 and you can get them new with Magpul furniture for about $800, IIRc. There's always the WASR, the old stand-by. The N-PAP and O-PAP runs around $600. And there are the DDI rifles as well, somewhere around $750, again, they can come with Magpul furniture.

And of course the odd Saiga deal that pops up.

Really, none are a notably better deal than the others, they just come down to features. Finish, furniture, parts compatibility, etc.

I hear the new century arms c39 v2 is getting good reviews and is in your price range iirc
