Best book?

In the groups opinion: What is the BEST text on Conceal Carry and Handgun Defense? I have a nooby friend that I'm going to buy a book for and I'm looking for the most comphensive, and detailed work. What say ye.

Stephen A Camp's Defensive Handguns is fairly comprehensive and a good read ... for the hardware problem. It covers pistol selection, ballistics basics, carry modes, and much more - lots of pictures.

Good training and Jeff Cooper's book on mindset (Principles of Personal Defense) are a good start on the software problem. This is most important.

I would have to agree with this. It might be a little harsh for a first read, but every word of it is true and to the point. Harsh as only Col. Cooper could be.
If someone is a slow reader, it won't take them more than an hour.

i think the best book you could get him would definitely be IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME by Massad Ayoob. its really well written and informative. i couldnt imagine any better book on the subject to give to your buddy. in fact, i think anyone who CC's can benefit from this book.

another one i read not too long ago that is would also be perfect for what you want is ARMED RESPONSE by David Kenik. it may even be a little bit easier of a read.

they are very similar books, and i personally think that anyone who even so much as owns a gun should read these books. and i say that because these books would be an invaluable tool in the event , god forbid, you ever have to use a gun for self defense.

I agree with Armed Response especially if they have no experience. Then In the Gravest Extreme.

With no experience, "In The Gravest Extreme" is kind of dry. I think it should be recommended if not required reading for all CWP holders.
For new folks it is kind of important to get them "excited" about our lifestyle. Not to bore them with legal-ease.

Have a look at Chris Bird's "Concealed Carry Manual" along with Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme".

ITGE is dry, but it's a great primer for Judicious Use of Deadly Force, and that class should be on everyone's 'must take' list.

John Farnam's "The Farnam Method of Defensive Handgunning". 2005 edition.

He's a great trainer and his books are incredibly detailed in regards to weapon selection, mechanics, defensive tactics and how to deal with LEOs after an incident. He separates revolver handling from semis, even DA from SA.

I'm surprised that people are aware of Massad Ayoob's book, but are not familiar with Farnam's. Massad needs to update his book.

In a similar thread a couple of weeks ago several books were suggested and I have them on order.

I took a class to obtain CCW and one of the required reading books was IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME. I wasn't very excited about reading this little paperback book and when I saw the copywrite, was even less excited about it. 1980.

I now think it should be required reading for anyone wanting to carry a gun. Much to learn in this book, it was an awakening for me and I've learned that Massad Ayoob is one of the leaders if not THE leader about being SMART in personal defense.

If the person your thinking of getting the book for is like I was, needing to be educated about what goes on AFTER you save your life, get him the book.

I just joined THR today and searched the forums for "Ayoob" to see if there was any discussion about books. Surprising that this thread is only 2 days old.

Anyway, I bought "In the Gravest Extreme" before I bought my first gun, simply as protection against ignorance. I highly recommend it, but Ayoob really should consider updating and/or expanding it.
