Best commercial bolt-action

What's the best commercial bolt-action design on the market? If you were building your dream precision rifle, what would you use? A Remington 700 action? Ruger? Winchester? Other?
I'm talking in terms of smoothness, reliability, etc. What do you think?

did a sako last month,damn smothe action,good production gun also.same with the tika.don't know if you can still get them from brownell's,you could in the mid 90's.

That's two different questions with very different answers. The best bang for your buck for a BNIB rifle has to be any Savage bolt action. The best action is far more subjective. The Rem 700 action is the one all others are compared to. Mind you, I know a guy who uses a Model 70 action for his 17.5 pound custom, Douglas Premium SS barreled, .300Win Mag, rifle with which he regularly won DCRA 'any rifle, any ammo' 1,000 yard shoots.

It might have been Ross Seyfreid who wrote that when putting together a custom rifle you either pay bucks for the action or bucks to the gun smith to make a less expensive action work. Either way you pay.

Were this my gun and I wanted push feed, I'd choose a fixed floor plate Sako 75 action. I own a couple of their rifles and consider them the best production rifles in the world today. The Remington 700 action need not apply.

If I needed pushfeed, I'd buy a Dakota. If that's not considered a "production" action I'd buy a Winchester and then pay the gunsmith.

Either way you pay. I'd rather start with a premium action.

Basis for a custom?? Remington---just cause there's so must stuff out there for 'em.

My Dad had a carbine length Sako bull barreled .270 with a full lenth stock that would shoot sub MOA at 100 yards no sweat. It was a little heavy for the field so he traded it off and regretted it.

As far as action designs go I'm partial to "As solid as possible" designs, particularly the Steyr SSG and SBS actions. Don't know how good thyr are in other departments but they are definately rigid and the two I'm trading for today are definately accurate.

I know a couple of target shooters who think the Tikka 565 (unfortunately superceded by the T3) to be a great basis for a long range rifle. With premium barrel, stock, and sights, of course. Nothing from Tikka but the action.
