Best gun for home protection?

I like 12 Gauge shotgun for home defense. I also have an AR-15 at the ready.
But, I keep a hangun; a Kahr 9mm with night sites next to me. As well as a S&W 342 PD.

Coach Gun

I like a 12 ga coach gun for home defense. With both of those short barrels pointed at you, not much chance of even an unexperienced shot would miss. Both barrels being loaded with buck shot will open a man right up or cut him in half. Might also throw in an old reliable 1911.

No handgun is great for home defense. I would say a good 223 carbine or a 12 gauge shotgun. Both backed up by a good pistol in any desent service caliber. 357 mag is fine. So is the 45 acp, 40sw, 9mm and 38 special. Stay away from 380's 9mm mak's 25,s 32's and other mouse guns.

Kahr P9

Love the little rascal! 7 jacketed hollow pts in the clip! (8 in the spare) Also, my choice for packing! And, on the other side of the sack, S&W .357 Model 65-3 w/ jacketed hollows and some work on the trigger that would make you smile! So light and crisp (trigger pull)..a tribute to the gunsmith who tweaked it for me.

Still holding off on the trip to Corpus..seems like there's no need to board up on Rita's present course..however, I can be there in 2 hours going parrallel to I-37 on county roads.

See you later!

First up is the Springfield 1911-A1, followed by the Maverick88/Mossberg. After all the Katrina stuff, the SKS now resides on Mrs. Foggy's side of the bed.

If we run those dry, then next is the Most Serious Artillery...The US Rifle Cal .30 M1. . . Popularly Known As "The Garand".

What gun (calibre) do you think is best for home protection?

After long thought on this, the answer is the gun you are MOST comfortable with, in the dark, regardless of caliber.

But if you want my personal opinion on home defense:

I like .45 acp or 9mm for home defense. Currently I have one gun in each of these calibers by my bed. I'd grab the 9mm first, but then again, I'm a capacity hound, and I know I shoot accurately with my CZ 9mm.

Andym79,

I am personally not into revolvers, but if I owned one, it'd be a .357. Muzzle flash can be mitigated by choice of ammunition, if that's a consideration, and I personally would not worry about the difference in decibels between a .38 and a .357. You are exceedingly unlikely to actually have to fire the gun indoors, and if you are ever in a situation that dire, then noise will not be high on your priority list.

Both my wife and I keep 9mm's for home defense purposes. Mine is a S&W 3913LS loaded with Cor-Bon 115-grain +P ammunition (around 1350 feet per second from a 4" barrel, slightly less from my handgun). My wife's is a Glock 26 9mm with a 15-round magazine, loaded with Federal 124-grain JHP's. Couple of carbines in the gun safe if we ever feel the need.
