Hi All
This has probably been asked a lot. What is the best option when you do long distance shooting (400yards plus). Which is best lighter bullets or heavy bullets. In my opinion, i would say best option is heavy bullets cuz they are less affected by wind, but lighter bullets give a bigger range as they reach higher speeds and have a flatter trajectory. I am thinking of using 150gr Sierra Gameking but i had a bad experience with Pro-hunters on my mausser.
Also, is there anyone who can let me know how the 30-06 performs with the 110gr bullets?:banghead:

Heavy.
At more than 400 yards (or 300 for that matter) nothing shoots "flat" enough to matter much. You must allow for the range.

The few people still target shooting with .30-06 like the 190 grain Sierra Match King.
A friend hunts elk with the 200 grain Game King.

A 110 grain bullet is pretty light and I have not fooled with them. The Speer 130 grain hollowpoint shoots well for a light bullet.

110 grain will easily top 3300fps.

But for long range shooting I would be looking at the 190SMK, 208AMAX, 210SMK, or even the 240SMK.

You should be able to push all of these at 2600+fps.

The 30-06 rocks!!

The 110-grain is a great varmint load, but the velocity falls off rather quickly after around 200 yards, compared to 150s and such. Poor ballistic coefficient...

If all you're gonna do is deer, out to 500, the 150s are plenty good. I'd go on up to 180s for elk, most likely, although many elk hunters use the 165s.

The really Ma Bell folks have talked about the VLD 230-grain bullets as The Deal. Sub-MOA out beyond 1,000 yards with 30" barrels.

While the 110gr bullets can attain a high velocity in an '06, they shed the velocity fast and are not a good choice for 400+ yard shooting. I would recommend the Hornady 178gr Amax for hunting purposes, and the Sierra 190gr MatchKing for target shooting purposes. In a modern action with a 26" barrel, the 178 can be driven to 2950fps and the 190 to 2900fps. Hope that helps.

Depending on what your hunting there in Nambia, I'd stick with a 180. If your culling the smaller antelope, I'd try the 130 Speer Hot Core. :)
