Like to get a Mil Dot scope in the 4-16x40mm range.

BSA and Leapers have some for around $100. Even with illuminated reticles.
I have a fixed 4x Leapers on my Marlin 30/30 and shoot 1/2" groups @ 100 yrds. with it.

Anybody have any experience with either Mfg. or can someone recommend some other make for under $150?

Thanks.

I have experience with some BSA models and a lot of experience with Leapers.

BSA scopes are fair optics for the money, but they lack durability. They're great on light recoiling guns as long as the scope doesn't take many jolts. I use one on my target .22. I have a strong dislike for their red dot sights though.

Leapers used to import some low end, rather junky optics in their early days. That has changed in recent years, and their scopes for the most part are quite a big step above the BSA units. This is one of the product lines I sell, so I've been spending a lot of time testing their various models. I won't sell something I don't believe in, and so far, Leapers has impressed me with most of their models. There are some that I wasn't too impressed with and I don't sell them. Which model/s were you interested in? Maybe I can give you some input on them.

I have the Sportsman's Guide 3-12X44 illuminated mil dot on my M-70 25WSSM, and it is working out nicely...$70.00 delivered (on sale).

Plink,

I was looking at the Leapers website and am interested in those three:

4-16X50 Full Size AO Mil-Dot Illuminated
Zero Locking/
Resetting
SCP-416AOMDLTS

30mm 4-16X56 Full Size
AO Mil-Dot Illuminated
SCP3-416AOMDL-A

30mm 3-12x44 Mini Size
Mil-Dot Illuminated
SCP3-M3124MDL2

Any real life experience is appreciated.

Mil Dot Scopes!

Tasco makes several differant Mil-Dot scope and are well within your price range. I have a 3.5-10 mil-Dot on a good 30-06 and it is very clear and does a good job. Look on Natches, or Midways web sites for cheaper prices.

any idea who makes those Sportman's guide scopes?

From China. Same optics house that makes BSA and others.

IMO, having had my fill of Chinese scopes, they are still not good. They'll do in a pinch but still short of adequate. They are showing improvements in the past year (judging by Millet's latest offerings at SHOT) but there are still a lot of sub=par stuff coming out of that country (as seen by UTG's offerings at SHOT). Give them at least ten more years to be at least average. They'll eventually get there, but htey are not their yet.

Also IMO, for the criteria originally posted, Nikon Buckmaster.

I have the BSA 4-16x40 Mil Dot on my Rem 700 .30-06. It's mounted in a set of Leupold rings/bases and has been on the rifle now for about 4 years or so. It holds zero year after year even after tumbling off the hood of my truck once. Optics are clear. Could be brighter but it's adequately so. Longest shot to date was two years ago on a 10 point buck. 350 yds.

I think it's well worth the roughly 80 bucks I paid for it from natchez.

Zerstoerer, the SCP3-416AOMDL-A is their top of the line model. It's a very good unit. I think they're the best value, even though they're a little more costly. You'd need to spend two or three times as much to get a scope that's as good. If you get one, consider getting the 80mm side wheel for it. The focus turret is a bit small and the larger wheel makes it easier to do fine adjustments.

Their 5th generation scopes like the SCP-416AOMDLTS you mention are good scopes for the money. It's their midrange line. About the equivelent of Tasco, but probably a bit more precise and maybe more durable. I don't like their lighted reticle as much, because light spills over a bit and somewhat illuminates the inside of the tube near the reticle. I find that distracting.

Their mini scopes, like the SCP3-M3124MDL2 are good for special purposes and work great for SKSes. They're durable and have good glass, but any time you get into optics that compact, you give up something. In the case of their minis, I notice some edge distortion and they aren't as bright as a full size scope with the same power and diameter. They also have the light spill over issue from the reticle. For a .30-30, it would be more than enough, but if you don't mind a big honkin' scope, I'd go with the SCP3-416AOMDL-A. Be forewarned though, it's a massive scope! :)

As for Sportsman's Guide scopes. It would probably depend on the model, but I know a lot of their scopes are made by "Famous Maker". Famous Maker makes fairly decent red dot sights and lasers. I haven't knowingly tried any of their magnified optics. They seem to be a few steps down from Leapers in quality from what I've seen.

Bushnell 3200 10x fixed. This is the best mildot for the money, about $185.00 for the last one I got. If you plan on using the mildots this is the scope you want.IMHO
