I have an old Colt Lightweight Sporter that I bought used back in 1992. It is a good weapon but it has the old style skinny barrel that heats up with firing causing the shots to string vertically. I have thought about getting it rebarreled but I think I would prefer an all new flat top upper so I could used some new style optics.

Any suggestions as to makes or models of good new flat top uppers in .223?

You might ought to do some measuring on that lower before you buy anything.

Colt had a bad habit of using non-standard takedown pin hole sizes & hole spacing there for a long time on civilian AR lowers.

If it's one of those, no standard upper will fit it without resorting to a off-set front pin bushing, or screw-together off-set pin.

I guess that's all well & good. But the chance of breaking the front pin lug hole off the lower is there if you forget and let it swing open all the way.
