Here are what I consider the best off-the-shelf personal defense pistol and revolver available at present. Your mileage may vary, of course, but these two are my personal "Best of Breed" examples.

Let's see what kind of combos you come up with.

Pistol is a SIG P229 in .357SIG, revolver is a S&W 65LS in .357 Magnum.

For Modern Design, Functionality, Durabilty, and ease of carry (Light Weight & Size) in an auto the HK USP Compacts are as good as it gets -- I own one each in .45acp, .40S&W & .357Sig and a Full Size with stainless slide in .45acp. I am a Colt 1911 fanatic but out of the box HK got it right the first time (No mods needed)! In a revolver the Ruger SP101 2.125" .357 Mag would be my choice.

Now having said all that I prefer my First Generation 3" Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 Spl (Not available NIB off-the-shelf) for CCW with the SP101 being my alternate CCW carry. When I carry an auto in CCW mode it is usually an HK USPC in .40S&W or a Colt Combat Commander in .45acp and if limited by attire a Walther PPK/s SS .32acp by Interarms (Not available NIB off-the-shelf). ;)

For me I think it'll be the SP-101 (with CT's) as revo and SIG 226 (now also with CT's tho no new pic yet). I am not phased by weight and so tend to have quite heavy guns. As ever, time of year and clothing choices will affect carry choice on the day.

Just taken a fresh pic of 226 with the CT grips ... so a bit of comparison for those interested in CT's .......

Current Production, and off the shelf?

Glock model 19 in 9mm, and 3" Ruger SP-101 in .357

S&W currently doesn't offer anything at all that makes me reach for my wallet.

I like the heavy metal because I shoot it better. So for me it's the CZ 85 Compact and S&W 646. The 646 will be getting a 10mm cyclinder one of these days.

Comforting more than comfortable. My RAMI actually is easier to carry and I shoot it pretty well. Don't have a snubby yet to go with it. Thinking about a 9mm. Would like a Ruger SP-101 or Taurus Instant Backup.

you guys hit the revolvers right on the head ( I own two 3" K-frames, a model 65 and a model 66). For an auto I'd have to say a glock in 9mm for a carry gun.

Best of the Breed?

9x19 and .357 hit it right on - Glock 19 and SP 101 as two standout "real" pistols.

Trouble is, I'm usually packing my P-32 or my Bersa Thunder .380
