Mostly everyone should be expected to say "Hail Mine!", so take your responses with a few grams of salt. I own 1911s and have shot them for generations. I prefer my S&W M&P45, which was cheap when I bought it... still not bad.

WOW! You all have been busy while I was away. Thanks for all your recommendations. As for price, I have to keep it under about 800.00. You all have given me a lot to study. Thanks again. JP

IMHO one must consider price to answer this question truthfully. It depends on how much you want to spend.

HK USP45 Tactical.

With the Match trigger, it is MUCH better than the standard USP right out of the box (not that the standard USP and the USP compact are much of a slouch either).

I haven't laid my hands on the new HK45 or HK45 Compact yet, but I am guessing they will be at least equal to the USP.

I'd agree with the HK. I carry a USP .45 Compact as my very favorite gun. Variant one, I carry with a round in the chamber, hammer down. I certainly wouldn't argue with those who said any of the Sig family, especially the 220.

Of course this stems from my own personal choice with design selection. I don't like a single action only like the 1911s. I will tolerate the DAO type (I own Glocks, an XD, and will likely get a Smith M&P) but I don't regard them as "best out of the box" because to get that distinction, to me, it must be da/sa capable. I like the safety of condition two carry but the trigger control of single action fire. As much as I like my Glock (I'm still getting to know my XD, don't have enough personal experience to form an opinion) I hate their triggers. Even my model 34 wasn't up to the standards of my USP.

SIG P220 in any of its configurations that suits you. The P245 is a decent gun too if you can find one.

I havent had a SIG not work like its supposed to out of the box, new models or old models, new or used. Just load the mags with your ammo of choice and your pretty much good to go.

Unlike a lot of the others, theres really no break in required, other than maybe making yourself feel better.
