i just got a ne ar, and it has a 1/8 twist barrel. i have tried some factory remington MC 55 grn ammo, but it didnt shoot well at 100 yards. shot good at 50, but the group opened up to almost 6" at 100 yards. (maybe a scope mount problem) anyways, i was wanting to know where the best place is to get M855 (62 grn ) or more better choice of mk 262?

thanks guys, brian.

P.S. any thoughts on what try in any other weigth bullet it well appreiciated.

Try Wideners and Ammunition to Go.

Try some Prvi 75gr Match in it if you don't want to shell out big $$$ for GMM or Black Hills 77gr.

Ammo

no such thing as cheap surplus ammo right now for the 5.56.it's our main battle round and we're in 2 wars, working on 3.weidners reloading has descent price on some 55 gr.pri-vai ammo but your best bet if your going to shoot much is to reload.won't take long to recoup your investment with todays prices and they will only get worse once barack and the dem control congress tack on a huge federal ammo tax.it's to hard for them to ban guns so they will just run up the prices of ammo till no one can afford it.better get your stuff now.

If your 1:8 AR is shooting 6 inch groups with decent factory ammo like Rem 55gr, then it's got something seriously wrong with it.

Go back and check to make sure the scope is mounted correctly and that it wasn't shooter error first. A 1:8 barrel can easily handle 55s, no problem.

To answer your question, though, there isn't much .223/5.56 surp floating around right now. Most of the "good" surplus, like XM193 and SS109, is more expensive than commercial, mostly due to price gouging... Cheaper than Dirt had a 600 round can of 5.56 for almost $380 last time I looked!

Prvi Partizan is a good brand for good, sorta-cheap ammo. There is no "cheap" ammo any more...

these guys carry more milsurp than you can fathom, plus they go to a ton of gunshows in the houston area. drop them an email, if you do not see what you want on their website, and tell them what you want, their at a Pasadena gunshow right now, but should be free next week, their customer service is top drawer, and their prices i allways find to be chepest. I just bought three more bricks of 17 aguila rounds, which are almost impossible to find in the first place, for 30 bucks a piece!!!! That is totally sick....

I have been happy getting Federal XM193 from CDNN, it's $200 for a case of 500 rounds.

Silver Bear and Wolf are fine aren't they? 500 rounds for $120 (Silver Bear) and $140 (Wolf). Is Wolf worth the price difference?

i was thinking that there might be a problem with the scope, scope mounting, or shooter error. since then i have bought a good one piece scope mount and am ging to resight it. i was able to group 55 grn ultramax, and 55 grn remington MC ammo into sub 1 inch group at 50 yards, and they would open up to around 6" at 100. i figured that maybe the bullets were yawing due to overstabilization and spinning out of wack. i want to get back out the the range and try the ammo again, and see if the new scope mount works. it could have also been my fault. it was after a long days work, and i only had a short time to shoot. well see, hopefully i can get back out there soon. thanks guys for all the help, brian.

Watch Ultimax...Reloads. Some will chime in with "I have had no problems with it", but many have had just that. This sounds like shooter error or as stated a poorly mounted scope, perhaps even an index issue - UMC isn't the greatest, but it should group...

Reload

Reload, reload it's costing me about 120.00 per thousand I have about 9 thousand stored away, the Prvi from wideners is your best bet if you don't reload.

i do reload, when i can get some extra money, i try to stock up on supplies. but, i have a hard time with the hole time issue itself. i have a son on the way and one that is 1 1/2 years old. so its hard to get to reload AND go try the loads out. (still in the working on loads stage of reloading.) i just have to be patient. right now i have some ammo loaded.....

i have some 75 grn amax loads with h4895 and varget.
some 68 gr hornady hpbt with h4985 and varget and some 55 vmax with h4895 that worked awsome out of my 1/9 colt, so i am hopeing it will prove good in the new rifle as well.

Nothing wrong with your rifle. As i understand, the newer, fast twist barrels like 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 shoot the heavier projectiles better. The older 55 gr. stuff, like xm193 is best in the older, slower twist barrels, like my old Colt 1 in 12 twist.

1x8 twist is meant to stabilize from 55 grain up to 75 grain bullets. 1x10 twist is meant to stabilize from 62 grain down to 45 grain bullets. 1x9 twist will stabilize from 50 grain to 69 grain bullets.

i was going to pick up some ammo at walmart today, they opened a new one here in Harvard, and actually carry a lot off ammo. they had regular remington, which i have already tried, but they had some federal balistic tip 55 grn (black box), i was going to try, but its kinda pricy. do you think its worth a try?
