I'm looking form a scope base, with quick release function, for my AR-15 that would raise and extend from the upper rail. Not looking to get an overly expensive part, but at least one that the screws won't easily strip out on and holds scope zero when taken on and off. . . . and back on again.

Please list any suggestions, and if possible, links and/or pics would be very helpful. Thank you!

Since you have to have a quick release and cantilever design, in order of cost, they would be:

American Defense Manufacturing AD-Recon or AD-Recon X for about $150-$160.

Trijicon Branded Bobro at around $200.

Larue Tactical has a few different models to satisfy almost every need for around $230ish.

The best IMHO, but not cheap, is the Larue Tactical SPR mount.

Another popular, and inexpensive option, is the Burris PEPR.

Not as cheap as the PEPR, but very interesting, is the DNZ Products mount.

What I did, instead of spending the money for the dedicated LaRue scope mount, was to get the LaRue riser http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=28 for $125 and mount a scope with rings on it.

It's not quite as cool as the SPR mount, but it serves much the same purpose for a bit less money, and you still get the LaRue quality. Buying a used LaRue riser would save you a bit of money.

The good stuff is pricey, but very much worth it. Very much worth it...

Crappy pic, but you can see the amount of forward offset, and how high it sets the scope up off the handguard:) Great mount, but not free;)

That was very smart. Great idea I wish I had thought of before purchasing the SPR-E!

One that I would need my own rings for would work fine with me. I'd prefer the whole unit, just something that attaches securly.

BTW, JDGray, what is the brand of yours?

That looks like a LaRue SPR in JD's image. I've got one too, and it's great. Very repeatable zero, and I remove and remount mine all the time.

If you get the Larue, just be sure to read the instructions on how to adjust the levers, and if you are going the Larue route, just get the mount instead of the riser and adding rings. You'd be surprised at what a good set of rings will cost you anyway and rings are NOT the place to go cheap.

Has anyone suggested Larue yet? :D

There is a reason that Larue is the most popular answer.

And you get some cool bumper stickers, a hat, a bottle opener, and some spice if you go with larue. Thats the only way i can justify spending that much for a mount;).

Okay, here's the whole story. I was considering getting a quick release mount for my flat top upper [18" upper, free float handguard, heavy barrel] and replacing my gas block with one that has a rail, then getting folding sights for front and back. Then I would have irons and an attaching scope for long distance. This option would run about $400-ish.

The other option would be a completely new 16" upper and just switch out uppers. I'd be going with a chrome lined barrel and either a chrome or TiN bolt. This option would be a bit more costly, at roughly $750-ish [for a Delton or Rock River], with sight options.

What would be your thoughts on this? Which way would you go?

Larue, American Defense, and Armalite all make what you seek. The Armalite is the least costly, and likely just as good as the rest.

:)
