Ithaca 37, mine is 50 years old and still works like a champ. Have a 20g too, probably 30 years old. Solid equipment.

Not an option, but I have to put my vote in for the Winchester Model 1897. It laid down the frame work for all great pump guns to follow, including the ever popular Remington 870. Similarly, the Browning Auto-5 did the same for semi-automatic shotguns.

So in that regard, I would consider the '97 and A5 to be among the most important shotguns ever created. Plus, the '97 didn't have a trigger disconnector, which just makes it that much cooler  .

Just a vote from a shotgun noob, so take it for what little it's worth.

All though they may not be the best or greatest IMHO the most important shotgun are the american made singleshots H&R's Iverjohnsons savage/stevens and such. back from before the depression into the 50's those old singles kept alot of families from going hungry and no matter how great a gun is.. it doesn't do you any good if you can not afford to buy it.
now that most of us don't need to hunt for food a majority of us still learn to shoot shotguns on a single. the local shops around here get nearly new prices for single shot 410's and are not interested in haggling because some one will buy it before the week is out
