Out of new production guns what do you think is the best, as in highest quality and reliability for SD, out of the box GI style 1911?

A Colt Series 70 Government Model would be my first choice for a box stock GI style M1911.

The Rock Island 1911 I have makes the Springfield 1911 I have look shoddy and ill equipped. The finish is lustrous, the fit is tight and the function is equal to or better than the Springfield. That said, I wouldn't give up either, as they have done well over the 3500 rounds I've fed them together.

The cost on each was minimal at the time.

The Rock Island was ordered along with a dozen 8 round clips that were and are the most beautiful I have ever seen. They are marked Novak from Italy and the blue is incredible.

my 2 cents on what I own and know.........

I recently picked up a Kahr/Auto Ordnance USGI 1911A1 to complement my Makarov. I refuse to register any plus-10 mags I may have, or underload them, so I purchased a .45 that I know I can shoot well under pressure.

I know some might consider me a reckless iconoclast for carrying a 1911 without whiz-bang 3-dot sights, a deep-scooped beavertail, skeletonized hammer and trigger, flat mainspring housing, and an accessory rail, but I can put eight rounds into the 7-ring or better at 7 yards all day long, and that works for me.

I paid $529 for it at Hoffman's. That was a bit too much but the shelves here in CT have been doing a fair impression of Stalingrad circa early 1943, so I don't think I did too bad. So far it has been 100% with FMJ; I haven't had the chance to try any JHP loads yet.

I just used white finger nail polish to paint the front sight to help me pick it up faster.

It seems to work well so far but I did have to explain to my wife why I had purchased finger nail polish.

Why not shop for the real thing? Plenty of WWII and post war 1911's around. I've got a 1944 Remington Rand that ran me about $800 with holster and web belt.

I also have a Springfield GI and Norinco Model of the 1911 A1 and both are great.

A Colt Government 70 would be an outstanding choice too.

I've been very happy with the Rock Island GI 1911a1. Shoots anything I've ever put in the mags. I can absolutely say for sure that it is more accurate than any 1911 I shot in the service. Being fare though they were not new 1911's. The absence of a firing pin safety makes for a very nice trigger.

RIA m-1911 sells for 409 at our lgs. I bought the tactical 5" , 460 dollars and find its more than reliable and accurate. Also seems to shot anything so far. 6 brands tried fmj and hp.
