Say you have a fail to fire in a semi-automatic at the range. Hammer comes down, the firing pin indents the primer...but no bang. Factory ammo, not reloads.

How do you handle it?

count slowly to 10 while keeping a firm grip, then clear the action....away from the range, take immediate action...practice both....and find out why the gun failed to work with factory ammo....

If your semi-auto has an outside hammer that you can cock. Manually cock it and try it one more time. Then follow mtngunr's instructions...On rare ocassions some rounds need two strikes. If your gun is an old one or you think the hammer spring may have a problem see a gunsmith...

I see a lot of them at the range. keep it pointed down range and do the slow count. If you can't re-cock, then eject it.

What does cdef466 have to do with fixing an FTF??

How safe is the ejected cartridge that has failed fire (after 1 or two hits)? Is it possible for it to discharge?

It is possible for an ejected cartridge to go off. However, unconfined in a chamber, all you'll get is a fizzle. The case will bulge and perhaps rupture -- but often the bullet won't break crimp. You could be injured if a tiny piece of brass struck you in the eye.
