Since the topic was brought up, I think I have a "winning" idiot mark on my Colt. It's a very nice (otherwise) 1936 Pre WWII Commercial model. Some previous owner must have been drunk, and trying to reassemble, moved the slide and not only scratched it lower, but on TWO places on the slide. Let's see YOUR idiot marks!.........................................

Yea, that's a good one. :D

I have an idiot mark on my first and only front strap checkering attempt. Does that count?

It's functional, but not beautiful.

I would have say mine is one of the worst just because of the 1911 it is on. This is my Clackamas Kimber. I didn't do it though, not that it makes me feel any better.

I have a feelin' this thread is gonna be like a bad car wreck- it hurts to look at it, but yet you can't turn away. :scrutiny:

Rinspeed, that is one good looking Kimber. I'm trying to make excuses to myself right now as to how I "need" another auto. ;>

The "cool" thing about mine is that since it has some wear, I don't mind shooting and carrying it. I have a pair of Colts from the 1930's, both similar wear, with slightly aged ivory grips. I think they will probably be some of the last guns I part with, as they both do exactly what they were designed to do, even after 70 years, and still look pretty doing it. If I ever add a little scratch here and there, I'll probably never notice it. I hope to someday wear all the finish off (I should be so lucky to have used and carried two fine guns to that point.......).

For the life of me I've never understood why this is so difficult for some?

I've NEVER (knock on wood) done this. Why? Because my first 1911 cost me around $750. I just told myself I was absolutely NOT going to idiot-mark the thing!

Unless it's a heckuva deal, I pass on idiot-marked 1911s. You never know what else they've tried to "improve" while they were in there.

I especially cringe at the sight of the "raging takedown mark" in which the arc runs from the frame all the way up the slide!

Previous owner's fault:

It's less apparent usually, I guess that lighting highlights it. Looks pretty bad in that photo though. :(

I have one but I can't post pictures. I have very sweaty hands and left a finger print on the nice blue steel of a model 94 brand new that is marked for life. It is like I used acid on it and ingraved my finger print on it.

This one was done by me. First pistol I bought. Didnt know the slide stop bottom was so sharp was shocked when the first time I took it apart and put it back together this happened. Since then it has gotten plenty more wear though.....live and learn.

just makes it one of a kind.... marked for life as your gun... be proud.. better than carving your name.

Just got my new RRA Basic Carry in July after an 18 month wait. The barrel bussing was so tight that I wore the parkerizing off the recoil spring plug tring to get it off.

Is there a product I can purchase to re-parkerized the plug?

This isn't a pistol but here's my idiot mark that I didn't do my friend accidently shot his gun off while we were at a trap shoot. It took about about a 6" chunk area of concrete off the line and sent one pellet in my head one in my cheek and the one that ticked me off was the one in the gun. I didn't even know I had been shot I turned around and said okay who's the wise guy that hit me with the rock. The range officer came running up to me and said I had been shot. I looked over to my buddy he missed shooting his foot off bu almost 2" the cement was smoking and his eyes where as big as saucers. The pellet to the head just grazed me. He asked if I wanted to go to the hopital to get checked out I said #$%^ no I'm in the lead I'm not quiting now I feel fine:D. i decided to leave the pellet it the gun to add to character. It's old and beat up anyway. Bonos points to anyone who can tell what the gun is from the pic

Don’t know if this counts as an “idiot mark”, but I wish I had a picture of it – a few years ago I found a near mint 1911 commercial made in the early 20’s, the only mark on it was some idiot completely cut off the entire trigger guard (the “Fitz Special” trend was very fashionable several decades ago).

I almost cried when I saw it – I bought it, had steel stock TIG welded back on and carefully reshaped it until it looked almost as new and then had it nickel plated… but it was heartbreaking to see it at first.

It's ok Johnson, my girlfriend and I laughed pretty hard. However, I wanna see more! sry I dont have any to show
