My old eyes just can't hack it anymore with iron sights so I've started switching to Optical sights. I've got a red dot and two Holosights (an Eotech 512 and a Bushnell HoloSight - essentially a licensed Eotech 510 without the guard). All work wonderfully but because they sit anywhere from an inch and a half to 2" higher than the bore I'm wondering what the optimum zero range is.
This really isn't an issue with irons because with a handgun I've always shot at ranges less than or equal to 25 yards. With adjustable irons I zero at 25 and forget about it. The irons are so close to the bore its not an issue.
With opticals sitting high above the bore zero range is an issue.
With the red dot on my 44Mag zeroed at 25 yards POI is about 1.75" low at 7 yards and rises to zero at 25. With the holos POI at 7 yards with a 25 yard zero is about an inch and a half low.
Is there a way to beat this or do I just have to live with that effect since the optics are so high above the bore? should I maybe try a 12 yard zero or even a 50 yard zero?
This isn't that big of a deal but is a bit annoying until I get used to it.
So what do y'all recommend as a zero range with a red dot or holosight on revolvers?
