Today at the local Wal-Mart I saw someone open carrying. It looked like a BHP and I asked him if it was. He said yes but it is in 40 S&W. I'm kicking myself for not getting more info but I was very squeezed for time.

Has anyone here heard of a BHP in 40 S&W? I know I never have.

A product of the 90's when everything 40S&W was white hot.
For those that have them, CDNN even has some mags!

Yes sir they made em for a short time..
I have a Practical in 40 for many years. Love it

I've owned a couple. Sold off the last one recently. Being an all steel pistol it soaks up the increased recoil of .40 nicely.

The recoil spring by necessity has to be pretty stiff so it's a bit more difficult to retract the slide to load, clear malfunctions, etc.

The slide is thicker so it's not quite as thin and svelte as the original BHP.

I prefer 9mm BHPs, but if you like .40 and you like BHPs, you'll likely really like the .40 BHP. For reloading reasons, I consolidated to 9mm and .45acp, otherwise I'd still have them.

I bought one.
Took it back the same week.

I was not a weakling, but it was obvious once I got it home that quickly & easily manipulating the slide was not going to happen.

Regular use & malfunction drills would have been more effort & time-consuming than I was willing to deal with.

Never come across a .40 since that took so much work to rack a slide on.

There was a time when I was close to buying one. I do as much research as possible (and reasonable) before making a purchase and ran into an article that mentioned how thin the chamber walls were.

I doubt that in reality this would have amounted to anything, but the .40 S&W was the new neato high-pressure cartridge at the time. That article chased me away from the idea.

Thin chamber walls, that's a good one. :what:

I've had a pair for several years and shot IDPA quite a lot with them. Lovely pistols for shooting .40 with. The recoil spring is stout, but it's a very usable pistol.

I owned a few of them at one time, the 40 BHP is, possibly, still, the best handgun ever chambered in 40SW. If you need a handgun in that caliber.

First 40 I ever owned. Bought it in the late 90s when a sporting good store was going out of business. Most unreliable gun I have ever owned. Also, it was more snappy then a Glock 23 I later purchased after dumping it.

Don't worry dude, you don't need the gun just the holster

I didn't wait! I put my support foot forward, brushed my cover jacket aside, took a combat stance, and reached for my holster - My surprisingly empty holster! There I was with an empty holster, two extra magazines, and no gun! He glared at me; and, without any other options, I narrowed my eyes and started back at him. I had to think fast; and, without any viable alternatives, I decided my best chance to survive against this fellow, who was younger and much larger than I am, was to do my best imitation of, 'faking it'. So, with my gun hand at my side and from a gunman's crouch, I yelled at him, 'Don't make me do it!'

I've had two .40S&W HiPowers. One a hard-chromed version (they called it "silver chrome") and a high polished blued version. Both outstanding pistols, especially after removing the mag-disconnect "safety" feature, and having a trigger job by Don Williams. They launch .40 very comfortably - especially with the rubber Pachmayr grips (best option for these guns in my view). Yes, the recoil spring was a bit of work to operate, but not difficult, in my view.

Much as I appreciated them, the 10-round mag capacity and some occasional trigger-finger sting led me to sell them and replace them with three SIG P320 pistols in .40S&W. I LOVE .40S&W caliber, given a great pistol designed for it.

I sort of miss having my .40 Hi Powers, but that said, the SIG P320 40 and the M&P40 are superb replacement pistols, with significantly higher capacity and are guns that I would prefer to have in my hand should a defensive situation arise - thus, I'm ok with the trade-up.
