Bill to repeal pistol purchase permit in MI!

The Michigan House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee will consider a pair of bills which will eliminate Michigan’s onerous “permit-to-purchase” for handguns.

House Bill 5972, sponsored by State Representative Kim Meltzer (R-33), and House Bill 5973, authored by State Representative Joel Sheltrown (D-103), would eliminate this bureaucratic obstacle, which has been obsolete since the national instant check system went into effect in 1998. Under the current system, gun buyers must apply with their local law enforcement agency and pass a written test before being authorized to buy a handgun. The “permit” is good for only one gun and it expires after 10 days.

This would get rid of a major roadblock to those interested in purchasing a pistol in Mi! Let us purchase pistols like free citizens instead of asking the king "please, sir, may I get a pistol?"

Perhaps. The "golden rule" does often hold true, but you can hope that a representative government will occasionally serve its purpose...

Just to help overcome any writers block out there, here's a letter I just sent off.

Dear Representative ______,

It has come to my attention that two bills, HB5972 and HB5973 will be heard before your committee this coming Tuesday. As a citizen of Michigan, I would like to voice my opinion in support of these two bills. They would remove archaic and onerous bureaucratic restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms in Michigan that only serve to add more paperwork, time and expense to those exercising their right to keep and ear arms. Additionally, the pistol purchase permit process is entirely redundant to the NICS check performed on firearms purchases. Further, as we can only expect law-abiding citizens to follow the restrictions currently in place, these restrictions only serve to prevent innocent citizens from being to ably defend themselves against the criminal element. It is my hope that your committee will approve these bills and so they may move forward and help Michigan be a freer state.

BluEyes, I didn't want to mock your writing, just trying to prevent an error carried forward if anyone else uses it.

Generally you can get free proofreading in the activism section, by the way ... any more Michiganders (Michiganites? Michiganeers? Michiganigans? Michicanauts?) who are sending a letter could probably get a free proofread here, I'll do it when I drop in (no promises on exactly when, but I tend to wander through when bored) and I'd assume other members would be willing also.

There are downsides to removing the registration requirement. It relates to carrying open within 1,000 feet of a school (which is pretty much everywhere).

With the way things are setup now, if your home was close to a school and you didn't have a CPL you could still open carry while walking your dog because you had to get a purchase permit.

Remove the permit and you are no longer covered to OC in this 1,000 foot school zone. You can't even go outside to flip burgers on your back porch.

The OC crowd is not in love with the idea of the purchase permit going away unless the 1,000 ft school restriction disappears at the same time.

I've got my CPL so I don't care. Never jumped on the "paying for a CPL is like paying a fee to vote and I won't do it" bandwagon.
