So, after a day of surprises followed by surprises, my wife kidnaps me, takes me to the knife counter at Sportsman's Warehouse, and forces me to pick out a knife.

Oh, gawd, the pressure!

Well, I've been looking for a Case XX Pocket Hunter for some time, and they had one, in "Pocket Worn" Harvest Orange Bone.

This was a pattern I'd originally spurned, because the name, considering its size, seemed absurd. It was only after getting a full-sized Folding Hunter earlier this year that I finally "got it" with that pattern, and sought the pocket version.

Here's the big one, alongside a Buck 110:

And, as you can see, the Folding Hunter is an eminently practical pattern, if somewhat large for daily carry in an office environment.

I've been carrying a Case Peanut as EDC for some months now, and I've grown to like it. The only thing about the Peanut that I've found awkward is the fact that the pen blade has its nail nick on the opposite side from the main blade so you have to use a different grip to open it and, being a shorter blade, its spring has more leverage, making it slightly stiffer to open. It's not a big deal, but noticeable.

Today, finally, I got my hands on the Pocket Hunter, a scaled-down version of the Folding Hunter pictured above.

And the Pocket Hunter I got looks like this:

Here's a somewhat larger image:

Notice that both nail nicks are on the same side, allowing either blade to be opened from the same grip. Notice also that the two blades are the same length: 2 1/8", being about the same length as the Peanut main blade.

The Pocket Hunter main blade is just a tad wider and a tad thicker than the Peanut main blade.

It drops into the pocket exactly like the Peanut, and carries every bit as easily. The larger secondary blade has a very useful profile -- very like a mini-sodbuster -- and complements the main clip-point blade nicely.

I took to this knife at once. It is EDC starting today.

I want to thank Steve for putting my feet on the road to these delightful, small-but-endlessly-useful tools.

Thanks, man.
