Ithaca NID Mag 10 3” Double Barrel Shotgun
Serial Number 500472 - made in 1937

Ithaca produced 1011 of these monsters in all grades starting in 1932 until 1942 when production forever ceased.
A handful of 12ga 3”mags were also included in this run.
Barrels are 32” full and full with mirror bright bores - no dents (wall thickness is like howitzer barrels). Barrels have twin real ivory beads. The outside barrel blue is 75%-80% with thinning at muzzle (case wear) and some light field scratches.
There are two small areas of removed corrosion that have left a dark stain (removed blood). A thumb print just ahead of right side of forearm and a 3/8” square 3” ahead of breech on rib –side of right barrel-these may clean-up.
No pitting. The barrels have never been re-blued and they “ring” true. This cannon is equipped with extractors.
The forearm iron and trigger guard have 100% blue. The forearm wood is of the beavertail type with very nice figure and deluxe fancy checkering and is in perfect condition.
The receiver retains 20%-30% case color-balance smooth bright. This gun is very tight and the tang lever upon closing returns right of center. This gun has twin triggers and there is black rubber recoil button attached to the rear or the trigger guard bow (smart).
The butt stock is also nicely figured and fancy checkered-no cracks or splits. It exhibits very light hunting mars. There is one 1” scratch between the right shield and the top tang (see picture) and one” ding on the right butt stock flank (see picture).
There is an Ithaca red sunburst recoil pad (handy) and the pull to the front trigger is 13”.
Lastly, this little beauty weighs in at about 11 #s.

Character, Soul, Craftsmanship...

You know there are some unique characteristics in the World of Shotgunning and loads.

This 10 ga with its payload is very much like a 28 ga.; payload to bore makes it more effective than it is supposed to be. Like the 28 ga., this 10 ga with its 3" loading also has short shot strings.

Eleven pound 10 ga gun and these point, swing, follow through very nice, and the recoil is mild / manageable. Seriously.

Seven pound 12 ga gun with similar loadings [3.5" shells] one knows they have fired it in a pump, gas guns work better like the SX2.

Thanks Lee!

"Yeah, it's only a 10ga., but it sure hits like a 4ga. At my age, the "ol' number four" was getting a bit much to carry. This one's light enough it feels like a wand." :uhoh: :D

Did somebody put the pretty gun in their mouth?

Note to self : send pretty pictures of EXPENSIVE custom 28 ga shotguns to Trapper's kids. :D
How are them great kids anyway?

-

I would suspect this gun was used in the Market Days. Blood from a Lot of waterfowl most likely.

Steve - The kids are outstanding! I just finished reading to them and tucking them into bed. I can hear my older son reading to the younger one... some book about Ninjas :)uhoh: Really. It's for a school assignment. I had to work hard not to laugh when he brought it home).

#2 son got a Red Ryder from Santa this year... although now it's simply a "Ryder" (I seem to remember someone saying something about "fit" a time or two). He hasn't had a lot of opportunity to shoot it, but when he has, empty aluminum pop cans stand no chance. We watched the "Eddie the Eagle" tape again the other day, and now he's seeing how fast he can say "StopDon'tTouchLeaveTheAreaTellAnAdult".

If I revive my Fototime account, I've got a couple decent photos of my older boy with some doves and a goose or two.

BTW, my semi-useless-dog :) is going into semi-retirement. After a day of dove hunting this fall, he completely lost his hearing for a few days. It came back, but I don't want to mess him up too badly. He's also starting to get a little gimpy in his left rear leg. I'll still take him out for the occasional grouse/woodcock hunt, but not to overdo it.

However, that means that we're picking up a new German Shorthair puppy in a couple weeks. Woohoo!!!! The kids will have a blast, and it'll keep the old dogs on their toes (not to mention the cats). I'll post some pics once we bring him home.

BTW, if you ever make it up here (hopefully to celebrate the passing of our CCW legislation), you are welcome to stop by, spoil the kids and shoot the Model 42. ;) :D
