FG makes a buddy of mine become Famous Grouch.

I've hunted quail, but never had the opportunity to hunt grouse. I've long regretted that, since they're bigger than quail and therefore there's more "eating per bird". Meddling around some far back-country in Nevada one time long ago, we jumped a large covey of chukar. Same thought: "Big yummies!" :)

I hunted chukars in a canyon in eastern Washington in the '70s. Even though we had dogs, we didn't get a bird even though there were 3 of us with the 2 dogs. They ran uphill and when we climbed to them, they flew back to the bottom. I was young then and gave out after 3-4 hours. Just before they flew they'd laugh that "chukka-chukka-chukka" at us. They, indeed, got the last laugh. :cuss:

I cooked up the grouse with bacon, shallots and mushrooms in a white wine sauce. Wow. Fantastic eating. Better than pheasant. I will be chasing these guys again in the near future. Screw dove hunting...

Ive hunted grouse a bit in the mountains with my malamute bird dogs. The dogs flush them, (I hear the flush but often dont see it) the birds fly up in a tree, the dogs look at them so I know where they went, shoot birds in neck or head when possible with K-22 with shorts or round ball loads in rifle, birds fall out of trees making very happy dogs. They figure it out after the first bird or two and you tell them to find birds. Thats when they stick around watching the birds so you can see them.

3 grs Unique with round ball in 30-30, 6 1/2 grs Unique with round ball in 45-70, or 4 grs Red Dot with round ball in 348 all work well, the larger calibers being nice to have with the magazine loaded with regular loads when in grizzly/grouse country.

There is a ton of bear scat around where I hunted the grouse, so I brought a few slugs with me. We only have black bear, so I was not really concerned. I may try popping one with a 38 special next time. Works great fr bunnies.

By blue grouse do you mean sooty grouse? I think that's the one that bellows up in the trees. If so, and if you have Netflix check out the show "Meateater" . Hands down best hunting show I've seen. He has a two part episode on hunting sooty grouse. First episode he struggles and second he meets with an Alaskan woman who shows him how it's done. Really great show.
