blue wonder gun care

for some reason the search feature doesn't let me search for blue wonder... probably because every thread has "I wonder" or something along those lines somewhere in the body or title.

anyway, I'm going to be getting a blued GP100 at some point in the near future and a tucker gunleather hf3 along with it to start. first gun!

I love how blued revolvers look, and I am aware they are more likely to rust and are higher maintainance in general (I can live with that). I do want to take good care of her all the same.

Blue Wonder products look promising. I was wondering if anyone could comment on the quality of BW, or just have something to say about blued guns and gun care in general.

I've used blue wonder a fair bit on my guns, mainly my rifles. I think I've used it on blued guns twice, once my beater model 15, the other on my NIB never fired model 19 after I finally got to the range with it. Worked fined, didn't seem to strip the bluing or anything. I was careful to wipe any drips off the frame as soon as I could, and nothing seemed the worse for wear. Stuff does work as advertised.

Blue Wonder works OK on the outer surfaces. I also follow-up with Birchwood Casey Barricade rust preventative. Blue Wonder makes a fantastic home bluing kit.

I built a muzzleloader from a kit, tried to blue the barrel with Birchwood Casey Permablue - turned out horrible. I did the Blue Wonder cleaner followed by the Blue Wonder bluing process - right over the permablue, and it turned out beautiful. Then I neglected the rust preventative (which was in the instructions). The next day I had a brown rust barrel. So, I used the Blue Wonder cleaner again and it took most of the rust off. Then I Blue Wonder blued again and I have a beautiful barrel with hints of red in it and it looks fantastic on a Hawken muzzleloader replica. I followed up 8 hrs after the blueing with Birchwood Casey Barricade and it is just fine now. I just need to get after sanding the stock down.

I would not use Blue Wonder by itself as a barrel cleaner. I put Outers foam in the barrel, let it sit about 15 minutes, then put some Blue Wonder in and scrub the barrel with a nylon brush. Follow up with a couple patches, a little CLP for rust prevent in the barrel and it seems to work very well.

Blue Wonder is about the best powder residue solvent I've ever used. However, removing powder residue isn't usually the problem; it's the copper or lead that's the hard part.

I like BW. It has a strong, permeating smell, but it's not a bad smell, sort of like Pine-Sol cleaner. I was also surprised at how "loose" the gel is. But it gets a metal surface clean enough to apply bluing salts, so it's pretty thorough.

No problem with blued guns that I've seen. I'd expect it to be safe for bluing, since the same company makes a home blue kit. Then again, maybe that's how they sell more bluing kits (kidding).
