I've thought about picking up a .223 bolt action rifle to complement my AR, but I got to thinking, my AR has a 5.56mm chamber and as such I've bought a bunch of 5.56mm ammo and it would be a bad idea to shoot that stuff in a .223 chambered rifle.

So does any manufacturer out there chamber a bolt gun in 5.56mm?

Could you have a chamber on a .223 rifle reamed for 5.56mm or would the pressure be too great anyway?

Or are most bolt action .223 rifles actually chambered in 5.56mm (like a lot of ARs are)?

.223 Remingtons are NOT 5.56mm Military-Ready

The case sizes are DIFFERENT internally and externally. Do not shoot Military-Fare from a precision .223 Remington rifle. Both calibers are so POPULAR that range-picked brass remain easy-pickings. cliffy

5.56mm is loaded hotter than .223 and the throat of a .223 chamber is shorter than a 5.56mm

Its not going to blow up in your face, but shooting 5.56mm out of a rifle with a .223 chamber will erode the throat of the chamber thus making the rifle less accurate and reliable.

Shoot all the .223 out of a 5.56 you want, but not the other way around.

According to CZ-USA, the 527 carbine chambered in 223 will shoot 5.56 perfectly fine/safe. I asked this at 2 consecutive shotshows. Don't know about any other rifle.

I have a CZ 527 American in left hand and use 5.56mm ammo in that gun to hunt hogs.

This .223 and 5.56mm crap is driven by SAAMI. SAAMI waited until there was a lot of 5.56mm ammo coming into the US and then told their lies and issued their dire warning. For 40 years I have been firing 5.56mm ammo in my beautiful Sako that I had rechambered from .222 in 68 or 69. Also use it in my Remington guns.
