You need to protect the rifling at the muzzle from being gouged by the cleaning rod and any debris carried by it. Many rods come with a plastic cone that fits in the muzzle to prevent contact. If the rifling wears unevenly, you can kiss your accuracy goodbye, ask me how I know.

but since its a Marlin, the bolt can be removed for cleaning from the breach end, which is the better way to clean.

I've never seen bore giudes for lever actions. maybe one of the Stoney Point Universal one?
