I get a call from my roommate this morning. "Would you be interested in buying a brand-new Savage bolt in 7mm mag, for $75?"

Uh, yes.

Somehow, he found out that our local Wal-Mart had these two older-model Savages that were layaways, but the buyers stopped paying on them. They'd been sitting in the gun room, unsold, for God knows how long, long enough for them to be marked down to $75. There was a .243 in addition to the 7mm I bought. My roommate bought the .243- he's been wanting a Savage to rebarrel.

As for me, I got the deer rifle I'd been wanting to get for a while- not exactly what I wanted (I was leaning heavily towards .270), but I'll probably keep it. It's a Savage 110FXP3 combo, blind magazine, with a cheapo Simmons 8-point 3-9x40 on top. To top it all off, I also had a $50 Wally World gift card, so I walked out with this rifle having invested precisely $30.25 of my own money. Niice.

:D

I did learn that the buying process at Wal-Mart is as bad as everyone says. "Charlie Foxtrot" doesn't begin to describe the circus it took to approve this purchase. But it was worth it to me.

I hate you. I say that with love... I paid $200 for my "wally world been in the dang safe forever after some stockboy knocked off the front site and hid it from the rest of the world" Savage about three years ago, and thought I was getting a great deal.

Now, take that perfectly good rifle, and look at www.benchrest.com, for a fellow named Paul Dorsey. He'll true the action up. Then you wanna send it to Col. Billy Stevens, and have him put a Shilen on it.

It'll shoot.

How specifically did your friend find out about the rifles?

There were not on display, correct?

Just want to know what I should ask to check and see if any similiar deals might be found locally. I bet they'll be some guns that were never paid off after Christmass.

I do believe it because I have heard similar stories before about WM. Once in a while the manager will price something for clearance. The prices are sometimes amazing and you have to be standing there at the moment to take advantage.

You will find out that Savage is a good shooter if you put some decent glass on it and try a few different loadings in it.

The price is amazing  :what: :what:

Well, he heard this rumor online that Wally was clearing out their Weatherby Vanguards for $200 a pop. So he asked the guy at the counter to scan one of them to see how they rung up, and during this exchange the guy discovered the Savages and presented them as an alternative for a bargain purchase.

This guy, by the way, was extremely helpful, and went the extra mil;e to help us out.

I'd say your best bet is to try to find the sporting goods associate who know's what's going on, and ask if he knows of any bargains. Most stores have something in the back that you have to be told about.

Keep in mind that in this case, I don't think Wally has carried the 110 combos for quite some time- AFAIK, they've been doing 111s for the past year or more. So these were some seriously stagnant stock- marked down for that reason, not necessarily because they were layaway deadbeats. The layaway was just the method by which they were set aside and forgotten.

Thanks, that's the info I needed.

I'll make it a point to check the 2 or 3 local Wal Marts on a more or less regular basis. I'm sure a bargain on something will turn up, eventually. I don't really have a need for a Savage, but I wouldn't have turned it away at that price.

Excellent, glad ti hear that. Yes, it hurts, but at least someone is getting some deals!
I have had a Savage 110 in 7mm Mag for about 10-12 years and it's my favorite. Enjoy it.

I stumbled on a Thompson Center Fire muzzle loader last week at the local Walmart. It was the Black Diamond package for $170 - the lowest price I've seen this same package was at Natchez where it sells it for $270. The fellow who works the sporting goods dept. said they'd paid over $220 for them and he was told to clear them out. I bought it for my neighbor, he'd been looking for an inexpensive muzzle loader. We wandered down the road yesterday and shot it a few times, it's very accurate.

every once in awhile all the tumblers aline and the universe spills open to let you see whats possible.

or what ever the quote is, good deal :) I'm frugal and I LOVE a good deal, especially when it's on a gun :)

My best bargain was ammo, bought 1000 rounds of 9mm for $50, 30 carbine, $5/bx, 223 soft point $5/50bx, and 22 mag hollow point $2.50/bx, at those prices, heck with reloading!!!!

Man oh man - did you ever land on your feet - and your buddy too. Superb bargain ... I cannot compete except I got my Savage 99c as a raffle prize three years ago -that felt good too!! Cost me then I guess ... $10 for ticket and gas for a 135 mile round trip to collect.

Wonderful result. Pleased for you (sounds better than envious! LOL ) :)

I got a good deal at WM a few months ago too. Remington 597 for $75. Someone had bought it new and returned it and DEMANDED a refund because "it won't shoot right". He made such an ass of himself that they gave him his $$$ back just to get him out of the store. It then sat on the shelf in the back for about 2 years. At some point the manager put a tiny little sticker on the display case about the rifle. I just happend to notice it and ask to see the gun. It ws in perfect condition. Didn't even look like it had been shot. Took it home and loosend the rods that the bolt rides on and it shoots like a dream.

The folks at WM were actually very helpful to me. I did have to wait while he finished up a previous sale, but it was only about 10 min. No big deal.

It always pays to ask if they have any deals. The worst they can do is say no.

Wow that sounds like a honey of a deal. Congrats on that one. I think you owe your buddy big time.
