Had been meaning to get a Ruger .22 pistol for the last 10 years or so. Due to the shortage of black guns and an over abundance of Christmas money I bought one! Finally something I can thank Obama for!
At first I was kind of freaked out that I bought the latest and greatest plastic/alloy junk over the classic MK3. I bought the gun for fun and pistol fundamentals. .22lr is so much cheaper than thous other forty-something caliber rounds I love.
Walked out of Cabela's (local shops were out of everything) with it for $379 and no ammo. All other local stores were out of .22LR too! So with a brick of stockpiled .22lr Thunderbolt crudd ammo that my 10/22 loves I got to work.
I just cleaned, lubed and shot it. I knew that so/so ammo was going to cause jams. A funny thing happened though. In 400+ rounds it didn't. The little pistol just chugged along like a Glock. The Sr22p even kept running when a case split. It ejected it right out and picked up another round. Only caught it because I stopped due to the odd sound and lack luster ejection. It also gobbled up some cheap LRN federal rounds too. Not bad Ruger!
The leading in the barrel was significant. I would not fire more than 500rounds of Thunderbolt ammo without a cleaning. But this is how Thundergrud ammo is with my 10/22 as well. Except that the pistol is more reliable.
Likes, eats all kinds of ammo, light, decent trigger, stainless barrel, easy to load mags, easy to take down/clean, controls are easy to get to and intuitive, super reliable and reasonably priced.
Dislikes, magazine safety, slightly too small for my hands, it's easy to not seat magazines all the way, you haft to be careful with the alloy slide and I don't think the sights are very tough. The "WORST THING" about this gun is it's "need" for ammo. Also it needs more mags. Ha!
Overall it's a great pinker and fundamentals builder. Perfect gun to introduce kids and non-gun people to pistols. Due to reliability I would say this is one of only a very few .22s that could "not should" be used for self defense.
This gun is not a target gun. The trigger and sights are not up to it. Buy a mark 3 for that! Would also not carry it as my woods gun. The rear sight looks like it could be ripped off easily. Aftermarket units will fix that though.
Anyway hope my stupid little write up helped someone who was on the fence about this pistol. And no I did not take pics. It was too cold!!
PS, My New Years resolution is to louse weight by spending my food money on .22 ammo! It's a win/win!
