This month's Guns & Ammo dead tree magazine has another fine article by Gary James. Thia time he tests the Starr Carbine. I rather like that he seems to have identifies one of the major issues with this gun and offered a correction. Seems the ammo may have been short and likely to slide forward when in the carbine slung muzzle down as cav troopers did.

I have never had the oppertunity to shoot one, but in handling them and observing the operation of the action have always been impressed with them. At first glance then seem just a mod on Sharps designs. However the dropping block is actually the part that locks a rolling block shut. I was appalled at the lack of accuracy, though the same can be said of most ACW sepparate priming carbines.

I truly with the G&A folks would compile ALL of Gary James's BP articles into a digital formate amd offer them for down load for a reasonable cost. I love the great photos, both the wonderful ones showing how the guns work and the portrait shots with period items related to the guns. The great thing is he shoots these things and gives us his impressions and the data.

Just thought I would pass this along.

I am always amazed when I hear people say these guns are not accurate. This is 10 rounds from my 63 sharps carbine paper cutter. 3 out of black are my first 3 shots for elevation

Beautiful shot that I have never done...

~ 50 yards (but exactly 50m) open sights, nitrated kraft paper, christmas tree and 60 grains, Swiss black powder No. 3 ...
I think the accuracy is quite good ...

I sure wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of my 1859 Sharps infantry rifle!
