I'm new here, and to BP shooting. I just got a Uberti 1st model Dragoon and looking for a place to try it out in Los Angeles. Anybody know of any BP friendly ranges?

You'd be good up at Angeles Ranges, Burro Canyon and there're some guys that do these get together things and rent ranges through calguns.net. You can also jump in your car and drive to the desert/BLM and have at it, just don't set anything on fire.

I doubt any of the indoor ranges would allow it but you can give LAX range a call down by, you guessed it, LAX.

In addition to ASR and Burro Canyon is Lytle Creek, another outdoor shooting range. I've been to Burro Canyon and it's fine, just gets a bit crowded on the weekends.

I haven't tried using my BP guns at in indoor range.

Madsend81 I see you're in Lakewood. I'm in Paramount. Next time you go shoot can I tag along? Would be nice to have someone with experience my first time out

My bp experience is with long guns. I'm an NRA Certified Muzzleloading Rifle Instructor, but not pistol. I wouldn't be able to help with the finer pistol related details on your Uberti.

If you're in Paramount, the closest outdoor range is probably Burro Canyon. Just go up the I-605 to E 210 and exit Azusa Ave. Follow the road into the mountains and take the East Fork Road. The entrance to the range will be on the left. About 20 min of mountain road driving.

Lytle Creek is a bit farther East, closer to the I-15, but doesn't involve as long of a drive into the mountains.

The other option is to go onto BLM land. The closest would be Steele Peak in Perris/Lake Elsinore. Getting there takes about an hour w/o traffic. Visit http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=841219 for some info about volunteer cleanups at Steele Peak.

Doesn't Angeles actually sell black powder? Seems like that would make it the best first place. Maybe call first to verify.

I am new to shooting these BP pistols also - I need to get out to Angeles range.... preferably I would also like to watch someone who knows what they are doing since it seems like a lot of stuff could be done wrong  Does anyone know of any L.A. area BP clubs or events?

amazing what some folks have to go through just to fire a few rounds. guess I'm lucky or spoiled or both.

Both. Too many tree huggers here in CA want to shut the hobby down. Not just BP, but all shooting and hunting in general. We're fighting the good fight here in CA, but sometimes it feels like :banghead:!
