BP shooting questions

I was in Cabelas and saw some OX-Yoke patches .44 cal and Cabelas also had their own patches for 6.00 per 100 count..
OX-Yoke is 12.99 "100ct" and SMELL" good" and Cabelas is about half that. Is there any real difference between the two? I mean Cabelas is half the price of Ox-Yoke.

Also--I need to get a powder flask and grain measurer. Any tips on what kind to type to get?--Metal or plastic?

I have only used OX-Yoke patches and was amazed on how clean they kept the bore of my Third Model Dragoon and my 1858 Remington. Even with the heavy 40-50 grain charges of the third model.

I assume you mean a powder flask. I prefer the heavy brass ones.

I use both Wonder Wads and Cabelas Wads. Both are the lubricated version and work fine. I only have one bag of Cabelas Wads but I noticed they tend to be "jucier" when you pinch them as compared to the Wonder Wads.

I make my own felt wads with a homemade lube (the Gatofeo formula). But the Ox-Yoke wads are good. Check the store brand to see if they are as stiff as the Ox-Yoke. Some that I've tried in the past were very soft and didn't always ram down evenly.

I have come to prefer the heavy cylindrical brass flasks. The bottom unscrews and is easy to fill. I tape a label on each one with the type and size of powder. I also like the heavy brass adjustable powder measures. Sure they will tarnish but will last forever.

If you need a capper, I like the Ted Cash style. They are available in brass and german silver, hold a hundred caps, and are very well made and reliable. Another one-time purchase.

You can get very nice brass flasks at the Possible Shop--Colt or Remington style. They go for $28.00. One is 4oz and the other 7 or 8. You can also purchase a brass funnel which screws into the top of the flasks. MUCH easier to load that way. The screws which hold the top on the flask are VERY tiny. I use a plastic see-through measure. Prefer it to brass as I like to see what I'm putting in barrel.
