I have a BR-99 shotgun which comes with very bad factory sights. They are AR-15 style carry handle and front post sights which attach to the Picatinny rail on the shotgun. The rear part of the rail is part of the receiver and the forward part of the rail is plastic (part of the hand guard).

My preference is to get a reflex red dot and mount it on the receiver. I like the field of view of the reflex sights and I already have two of these for my .22 rifles.

About a week ago I fired that shotgun for the first time and all I had was an old Mueller QuickShot reflex sight to put on it. The Mueller doesn't stand up to the recoil of the shotgun and I found that it came loose at the point where the optic attaches to the clamp. It might well be I can make it more secure, but the sight in my opinion is not rugged enough for the shotgun.

So, I need to get something tougher.

However there is another issue...the height of the Mueller is not enough, which means that a better sight such as a Burris Fast Fire 3 would definitely be too low.
The shotgun has a straight combed buttstock so I will need to elevate the sight. See below, for reference where the center line of the Burris sits (red line) compared to the Mueller (green line) and my optimal sight line (blue line).

On my SIG522 I had a similar but less pronounced issue and I solved that by installing a Yankee Hill Machine riser (only 1/2"). That worked well to elevate my Burris Fast Fire 3.

But for the shotgun I am going to need it quite a lot higher, OR get a reflex sight with a larger window and raise it up on a similar riser. The Burris is good but has a small window. It is however much cheaper than a Meprolight M5 or an MSE ACQ or an Eotech.

What do you guys recommend I do?

By the way this shotgun is for shooting metal plates, poppers etc for practical shotgun competitions.

I DO NOT want any kind of tube sight, it has to be reflex.
