Congress in Recess, Immunity Legislation Still No-Go

For many months now, we have asked you, our loyal Brady Campaign members and supporters, to contact your Senators and tell them not to support S.659, a dangerous bill that would give unprecedented legal immunity to the gun industry and bar shooting victims from suing reckless gun dealers and manufacturers who, through their negligence, supply the illegal gun market and allow guns to fall into the wrong hands.

We have good news!

Congress has recessed for the remainder of August, and thanks to the thousands of calls, e-mails, and letters from concerned Brady Campaign members and supporters like you, we have been able to stave off this dangerous immunity legislation from being introduced in the Senate.

Thank you to all of you for standing up to the NRA and their cohorts in the gun industry! Thank you for taking action even when the odds seem stacked against us! And thank you for believing that our combined efforts can make a difference! They have!

Of course, we know the NRA isn't finished with this fight. But neither are we! So we'll need your help this fall! We'll have to make our voices heard again.

Keep watching for more updates and ways you can help. United, we can create an America free from gun violence!

"Thumbs up to all of you for your generous support! Together, we will build a safer America." - Jim "The BEAR" Brady

Okay, now that we've seen the Brady Center agitprop piece, does someone have the actual facts on the status of this thing? I just automatically assume that anything excreted from the Brady Center to Ban all Guns and Scary Things is disinformation -- probably because it has been every single time someone has researched any of their vomitus.

Status is 54 votes supporting the bill (more than enough to pass it) but Feinstein, Schumer et al have threatened filibuster to stop its passage, so we need to get 60 votes to override filibuster.

Last I heard, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle was going to come over and support the bill too in hopes of not getting a foot in his behind during reelection in his home state of South Dakota. If he does, I think that will break the logjam and the bill will pass.

I hope you're right, although it's sad to see the nation must depend on the likes of that @#$%^&!

Thousands of e-mails and letters, man all three members must be tired of writing by now.

Well.....

S. 659 -- Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act -- Introduced in the Senate 3/19/03

H.R. 1036 -- Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act -- Passed by House and referred to Senate 4/10/03

The reality is that S. 659 and HR 1036 must be reconciled one way or the other. There are various paths for that, but to say the BCTPGVUWTMMM-ites staved off introduction in the Senate is rather misleading when the Senate has both its own version and a passed House version in its possession.

Jim "The Bear" Brady is playing semantics with parliamentary procedure to make the BCTPGVUWTMMM-ites feel better.
