Well, good for Senator Orrin Hatch. He has introduced a bill in the Senate called the District of Columbia Personal Protection Act , S.1414.

Its stated purpose is "To restore second amendment rights in the District of Columbia."

What a worthy ambition!

It's about time!

This bill deserves to be monitored, and supported by calls and letters to our Senators.

And the purpose of him introducing that bill was to block the first real Second Amendment case to come before the Supreme Court, at the behest of the NRA. The NRA is afraid that a real 2nd Amendment case will go badly in the USSC, so they got Orrin Hatch to sponsor this bill to try and get the restrictions on owning firearms in DC repealed before the court case (challenging the DC restrictions on 2nd Amendment grounds) gets to the USSC.

This bill isn't a victory for gun owners. It's a pathetic attempt to prevent any real court decisions on this issue.

I See It Differently

Ummm, my esteemed Senior Senator introduced that bill last year - July 15, 2003. - Car Knocker

These things take time. It took ten years for HR-218, now Public Law 108-277, The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004, to get passed. I contacted my Senators and Representative often throughout those ten years.

I would agree with the NRA that the Supreme Court as presently staffed is not a group that I would want to look to for a "real court decision" on the Second Amendment.

Impatience could lead to ruin. Would you like to see a majority opinion on the Second Amendment written by Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

I applaud Senator Hatch and the co-sponsors of the bill.

It would have been better if Senator Orrin Hatch had proposed restoring the Second and Fourteenth Amendment rights to the people of California. :scrutiny:

No, but I would like to see a majority opinion written by Clarence Thomas. Remember, the majority opinion in the 2000 election case came down on the side of Bush. I doubt that those who supported Bush's 2000 election case wouldn't support the 2nd Amendment.

To quote Oracle, "I doubt that those who supported Bush's 2000 election case wouldn't support the 2nd Amendment."

I wish we could count on that. This same Supreme Court was the one that we thought would shoot the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance law out of the saddle as being unconstitutional. Sad to say, that didn't happen. I do not trust people like Ginsberg, Souter, Kennedy, etc. Scalia and Thomas have been good, but there aren't enough of them, unfortunately.

FWIW,

emc
