Dick's has a great deal on Brenneke KO slugs, $1.79 per box of five, plus 10% off if you buy ten or more boxes.

These slugs are so cheap, that I just had to buy some. I am curious, though, does anyone have any practical experience with them? How accurate are they, and how effective are they in the field against game?

I know that the regular brenneke slugs are some of the hardest and most powerful slugs out there. Do the KO's have similar preformance compared to the 2 3/4" originals? Do they have near the same density and power? Because for less than half the price, you can't beat the deal.

Hmmmm......why won't my picture work?

Taken 4 meat does with them so far, no probs. Good slug. The Rottweils have more moxie, but the advantage is more theoretic than actual, IMO.

Good price, stock up....

Hey, Dave. How much do the slugs penetrate compared to the Winchesters you used to use? How is the stopping power compared to the old winchesters, and how much does the slug deform when it hits bone, etc? Thanks again.

IIRC, three were passthroughs, all broadside shots in the shoulder or right behind. One was quartering towards me, shot broke the shoulder bone, broke a rib on the opposite side and ended up someplace in the offal. All blood trails were short.

As near as I can tell on deer sized game, just as effective as the Winchesters.

Thanks much, Dave. No one else has any experience with these slugs?

Hi, Manufactured right here in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia ! There plant is in Kearneysville, W.V. . Nice operation . English company . Went thru it for a job interview , didn't take the job, but remember the plant ! Shotgun shells by the MILLIONS !!!!!! ...........WVleo

Let's see - - -

Running the specs through the ballistic computer . . . .

I calculate they'll not be QUITE as good as standard Rottweil slugs on charging Cape Buff, when fired from The ULTIMATE pump gun. Should be better than buckshot on hefalump and sperm whales, though.

On an aggressive cardboard silhouette, though, it should make no difference whatever. :D

I haven't tested them extensively, but I bought a coupla boxes at CTD when I saw them at a similarly low price. They're similar to the good ol' Rottweil slug in that they have the good old "wadcutter" frontal area and the attached wad at the rear for stabilization.

They cycle through a 22" barrel 1100 okay.

Blain,

They've gone bang when I dropped a hammer on 'em. Which is very well and good, considering I bought several hundred of the puppies.

More recoil than Remington Reduced Recoil Slugs, less recoil than Remington Magnums. I have no experience with any Ultimate 3.5" Slugs, so I have no basis for comparison, there.

I did a search. Here's what I got

Wichita 871.4 Miles

Wichita 874.3 Miles

Topeka 978.9 Miles

I'm pretty sure whatever I'd save on ammo would get blown driving/flying the 800 odd miles.
:)

I never understood the need for the plastic wad to stay attached to the slug. If I've read correctly this was an attempt to stabilize the slug at longer range.

Blain, you might check your local Walmart first. Often times (esp. close to deer season) they stock 15 shot boxes of Winchester Super x 1 0z max dram 2 3/4 inch shells for CHEAPER than three boxes of five. That might still be cheaper.

Don't ask me why.

I bought like five of those 15 packs just for grins. The 2 3/4 inch shell is rated at 1600 fps, the 3 inch shell at 1750 fps.

Yea, those slugs are only slightly more expensive than the KOs. The Winchesters are VERY accurate out of my 870. The KOs are also very accurate. However, I like the KO's better because they give better velocity and since brenneke is known for hard slugs, they should penetrate deeper and have more stopping power than the Winchesters....that's the theory anyway.

Besides, I like the clear shell case for slugs. They help distinquish themselves from buck with just a quick glance.

What about the 20GA KO's?
I had some bad results with 20ga 2 3/4" Rem sluggers in my son's 20ga Rem 870. On two bucks we did not get full penetration, at close range 25-30 yards. One of the bucks was quartering towards us through. Second buck was broadside, broke rib, double lung and stopped under hide on the off side.
Next year- switch to 3" slugs, KO's or get a rifled barrel and use sabots?

Mal H: good enough for government work. I'm in Mesa. It's a suburb of Phoenix.

Dr. Rob: yep, I bought a little over a hundred rounds of Super X from Wally-World. The 15 round box was about six bucks. The little testing I've done shows they shoot high but dead on with my Mossie 500.

Blain Try to check your area for gun shows. Today I picked up some winchester 1oz for 2 dollars a box. I have found that you can get some good deals on other ammo. They had wolf .223 $99 for a 1000 rounds. I also picked up some .35 rem for $12 a box.
