A friend of mine has a Smith & Wesson Sigma in .40, with a broken extractor (not under warranty). He wants to get it fixed, but apparently S&W won't sell the extractor to any third-party gunsmiths; they've told him that to get it fixed he'd have to send the whole gun back to them.

He's trying to save money right now, so paying for the shipping and the repair is beyond his threshold of "necessity".

I've heard that the Sigma is essentially a clone of some model of Glock or other; so close a match that there was a lawsuit over it. So my question is, can a Glock extractor be used in place of the broken one? And, if so, can Glock extractors be had more readily than the S&W? And, last, is the replacement of the extractor something that's relatively easy (for a non-smith) to do on a Sigma?

If the answers to these questions were all "yes", I was considering fixing his toy for him, sort of as a present.

Thanks in advance,

he'd have to send the whole gun back to them.

That seems silly unless they need to tune the extractor and test fire for some reason. Would be alot easier to just send the slide.

I don't know if the extractors are interchangable. I know the barrels were on the early Sigmas. If the extractor is the same replacing the extractor would be as easy as detail stripping the slide.

Might see if Brownell's can get the extractor if S&W isn't willing to take your money.

I don't know what anyone says S&W says, but Gun Parts Corp. (www.gunpartscorp.com) shows the Sigma extractors at around $10 and nothing about being a restricted part. He can order on the net.

(I hate to tell tales out of school, but sometimes when a gunsmith doesn't want to fool around with a small job, he tells the customer that parts are not available, or that the gun has to go back to the factory. He can then get back to working on super target rifles or trap guns or whatever he specializes in.)

Ah, I found it. Out of stock. :( But that at least theoretically means that at some point or other it will be back in stock. Thanks for the info!

I see. I guess I can even sorta understand, since the overhead of billing and administrivia is the same for a big job and a small job, it maximizes profit to do only big jobs, if you can stay busy that way. Understandable, if not entirely useful in this case.

Well. With the site you gave me, now all I have to do is determine which Sigma he's got. Interesting that the C, F, and V variants of the SW40 all show different stock numbers for their extractors, and they're all out of stock. And the SW40E shows no parts at all except for the striker.

Thanks again!

Sigma40

What model Sigma in 40 Cal does your friend have?
I may have one in my parts bin.

They are a drop in part, easy to change.

Sigma40sw :D

Hi, BrokenPaw,

I am looking at their printed catalog, and they show the same extractor for the SW9C, SW9F, SW9V, SW40C, SW40F, and SW40V. The MFR part # is 251040000, the item # is 343360.

The only ones different are for the compact SW9M and the SW380.

sigma40sw, it's an SW40VE.

Jim, I would have expected the extractors to be the same across their SW40 line; It was odd to me that the listing on gunpartscorp's website had the 343360 number with the variant letter attached. ::shrug::

Ok, now I need to get my hands on one. sigma40sw, if you have one, how much do you want for it? (Since the Gun Parts people seem to be out of stock)...

Edit: Never mind, looks like Sigma40 was reading my mind...

Sigma Trigger pressure

I have a question, I bought the S&W Sigma and its factory trigger pull is like 9#s, I heard that someone sells that part in 5# but i cant find any web site.

Anyone help me here, the trigger pull on this gun is just way to heavy

Thanks
Mark

Sigma Trigger lightening

Mark,

You might try changing out the striker spring with a stock Glock (5 lb) or Wolf reduce power (4 lb) glock striker spring. That's what worked for me in my old 40F Sigma.
