Defensive Pistol Skills 101/
Concealed Carry Upgrade class

––––––->APPROVED BY THE BROOME COUNTY COURT <––––––––

Dave Jenkins of Rochester Personal Defense has developed the Defensive Pistol Skills 101/Concealed Carry training class to include the required components needed to seek your “Unrestricted” NY State Permit through the court system.

This is a shooting class as well as a certification class!!!

This class has been formally accepted by Judge Cawley of the Broome County Court as acceptable training to request the full carry permit. You may also be pleased to know that this class is the ONLY class you will receive actual training in, not just a performance certification. You will learn valuable but necessary skills that will not only help you carry your firearm more securely and more reliably, but possibly save your life.

This class is the most comprehensive class you will find in the area. If you are going to seek training to upgrade your permit, why not go with the class that will actually teach you the skills you will need to carry concealed, know when to fight and more importantly, know when NOT to fight. You will not only learn about the legalities and other important topics, you will be a better shooter when you get done!

Here's a partial list of topics and skills that you will learn during this course:

Firearm safety, storage, and cleaning
Legalities and justification in self defense (Article 35)
De-escalation and disengagement during a Critical Incident
Moral decisions about owning and carrying a firearm
Drawing safely and effectively
Malfunctions and stoppage clearing

Equipment Required:
Eye and ear protection, A working and reliable CCW handgun. NO target or hunting guns. Approximately 150 rounds of ammunition (jacketed bullets are preferred, but if we have to shoot indoors, you will need lead), minimum of 3 magazines or speedloaders with carriers, a quality strong side, belt mounted type holster (NO shoulder holsters please), comfortable footwear and weather appropriate clothing.

If you need advice or have any questions on equipment, call and I can help you determine what you need.

Prerequisites: NY State Pistol permit AND NRA Basic Pistol or equivalent training/shooting experience (contact Dave for details)
In order to fulfill the requirements, you must attend the following two sessions:

First Part: Friday Evening, January 16th, 6pm to 9pm
Location: Gander Mountain, Harry L. Drive, Johnson City, NY

Second part: Saturday, January 17th, 8am to 5pm
Location: Tioga County Sportsman’s Association
Carmichael Rd, Owego, NY

Registration: [email protected]

OTHER SESSIONS ARE SCHEDULED FOR 2009!!! SEE THE WEBSITE FOR DETAILS

Due to the high popularity of this class, seats cannot be held without pre-registering.

I thought NY gave CCW permits only to the "elites." The commons are now allowed to exercise self-defense?

I thought NY gave CCW permits only to the "elites."

New York is very "county-specific" for CCW. There are friendly counties and there are unfriendly counties. I have heard through the grapevine that Broome is known to be pretty unfriendly to unrestricted CCW, so this strikes me as good news.

I'm lucky to live in niagara county. sub 2 month waits for full unrestricted permits. We also get a purchase coupon when we register our new firearms. I just need to show my permit, give the seller my coupon, fill out the normal BATF paperwork and walk away with my pistol, ~15 minutes on average.

MAGNUM 44, if you mean less than two months' wait in Ulster, I'd say that's only if you're very lucky. I just submitted my permit application in Ulster County and they told me three to six months.

When I lived in Monroe County it took me 4 months to get my pistol permit back in 1983. I had to surrender it when I moved to Oregon. It took one month here to get my Oregon permit. Nothing compared to the paperwork to get one in New York.

How about us guys in Tioga County?

Does anyone know if the Judge for Tioga County will accept this class also? (btw, the gun club this class is being held at is in Tioga.)

I guess that I have to answer my own question... It only took me 1-1/2 weeks in Tioga county to get my permit upgraded to Unrestricted after taking Dave's class.

Judge Sequlia has issued numerous permits.

Judge Sullivan in Chenango has also.

Dave's class is spreading.......soon to be in Chemung County

4 mos for me in Ulster Co. Unrestricted. Good to see some NY boys here. I also applied and received a CC for PA. This will take me to Wyoming. My only problem with NYS is the lack of reciprocity, especially with the neighboring states. except for PA and VT

Here's an update:

Judge W Howard Sullivan in Chenango County has now officially approved the DPS101/CCW class for that county.
